Science News Daily || Netflix dumps Qwikster, keeps DVD service ...

Qwikster Netflix In a short blog post today, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced a total reversal of the recent plans that so mildly inconvenienced and irked us. Instead of spinning off the physical media side--DVDs, Blu-ray, and now video games--into a whole new website to be called Qwikster, Netflix will now keep all that stuff under the Netflix umbrella. In other words: please calm down, customers. Nothing is changing. Netflix's original plans called for the company to spin off its physical from its digital stores--now that the subscriptions are separate, why not make the stores separate? That called for a new site, to be called Qwikster, that housed all the physical media and was for all intents and purposes totally distinct from Netflix. But Netflix is now abandoning that plan, ditching all Qwikster-related projects and keeping physical media cuddled up with digital at Netflix.com. This is likely a result of the company's dramatic stock fluctuations rather than public outcry (the AP says custom

T-Mobile Rolling Out Two New 4G Tablets (NewsFactor)

T-Mobile on Monday doubled its tablet computer offerings, to four, with the introduction of its own branded device, the SpringBoard -- a collaboration with Google -- and its own version of Samsung's successful Galaxy Tab 10.1. The SpringBoard was made by Chinese manufacturer Huawei.

The tablets will work with T-Mobile's high-speed HSPA+ data network, which the carrier calls 4G.

The Bellevue, Wash.-based carrier, the fourth-largest in America by subscribers, is a small player in the tablet market, currently offering online Dell's Android-powered Streak (refurbished) for $89 and the T-Mobile G-Slate with Google, made by South Korean LG Electronics, for $299. The original Galaxy Tab and new Streaks are listed as out of stock on T-Mobile's web site.

Both tablets run the latest version of Google's Android, 3.2, optimized for tablets.

'Affordable' Price?

Prices for the new devices were not announced by T-Mobile, though T-Mobile is marketing it as "affordable," nor was a release date. The company said they will be available in time for the holidays.

The SpringBoard has a 7-inch HD multi-touch display, sports a 1.2-GHz dual-core mobile processor, and comes preloaded with applications for Blockbuster on Demand, Netflix and T-Mobile TV. Unlike Apple's iPad, it supports Adobe Flash Player. It's equipped with 1.3-megapixel front-facing and five-megapixel rear-facing cameras and shoots 720p for HD video capture.

"The T-Mobile Springboard is an implementation of Huawei's MediaPad announced in June," said tablet expert Jeff Orr of ABI Research. "T-Mobile USA has a longstanding relationship with the Huawei Devices organization from the 3G USB modems currently offered by the mobile carrier."

Its 16 gigabytes of storage is expandable to another 32 gigabytes with an SD card slot.

Increasing The Portfolio

"Our customers expect the ability to access and share content on the go at 4G speeds, so we've created a 4G tablet portfolio of 7-, 9- and 10-inch tablets with their busy, highly mobile lives in mind," said Jeremy Korst, vice president of mobile broadband and emerging devices, T-Mobile USA in a press statement. "The T-Mobile SpringBoard with Google and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 are the perfect evolution of T-Mobile's tablet portfolio, providing consumers with the right choice of tablet to easily look up a recipe at the grocery store, update social media sites on the bus or stream movies and music in the back seat of the car."

The Galaxy Tab has a 10.1-inch HD touchscreen display, 1-GHz dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor and full Adobe Flash Player support and ships with T-Mobile TV, Qello, Samsung Media Hub, Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD demo, SIM City Deluxe demo, Blio eReader and Zinio.

The cost of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 on Verizon Wireless, where it is currently available, is $529 for the 16 GB model and $629 for the 32 GB model.

T-Mobile is owned by Deutsche Telekom and could soon be part of AT&T if the government approves a merger deal.

West Union family returns to new home | TheGazette

WEST UNION ? Hundreds of people packed the Gibbs family?s front yard Sunday afternoon cheering, snapping pictures and chanting ?Move that bus!? as they anxiously waited for Audrey Gibbs and her six children to see their home for the first time.

The family learned last week it had been chosen by the ABC show ?Extreme Makeover: Home Edition? to receive a new home. The Gibbs spent the past week at a resort in Boca Raton, Fla., while about 1,500 volunteers and crews from the show worked on the home and raised money.

?They deserve it,? said Kevin Honn, an uncle of the family. ?They struggled for years and years, it?s just something they needed.?

After her husband died in 2000, Audrey Gibbs had a brain aneurysm, and doctors declared her legally blind. The family has lived in a rundown farm house and leased out land to local farmers.

?She?s just a fighter,? said Debbie Honn, a close relative. ?With all her medical problems, I?d have gave up years ago. She just kept raising those kids.?

The show?s host Ty Pennington and designers Paul DiMeo, Tracy Hutson, Sabrina Soto and Jeff Dye were on hand as the emotional family entered their living quarters for the first time on Sunday. The five bedroom farm-style house is complete with an addition resembling a silo and a barn housing a two-car garage.

The show is releasing few details about the interior of the home, until after the episode airs on ABC. The airdate has also not yet been released. Relatives said the new home will allow Audrey to work as a massage therapist from home: She had to give up her job as a cosmetologist after losing her eyesight.

The Gibbs? grandfather, Roger Honn, said there is a mechanic workshop attached to the house for his grandsons to work on their motorcycles.

Josie Springman, a niece of Audrey Gibbs, said she?s mostly excited for the family to have little things many people take for granted, like working toilets and a dinner table where they can all sit down together.

?Before they had to sit at a picnic table,? Springman said. A ceiling in the home also was collapsing.

On Sunday, the Extreme Makeover design team said the family?s mortgage had been paid off thanks to local donations. Northern Iowa Community College and Upper Iowa University also awarded scholarships to the children.

?The amount of love this community has for this family, we?d never be able to finish this without the volunteers,? Soto said.

Ed Larson and his wife Janet of Larson Construction Co. of Independence, who were the builders on the project, said taking part in the project was rewarding.

?It?s a beautiful home done really, really well with some professional designers. It?s very, very nice. They will be very happy, all of us will,? he said.

Family members say it?s a miracle and are forever in debt to the complete strangers who changed their lives.

?I just want to thank everyone for the whole family from the bottom of our hearts,? Debbie Honn said. ?What they?ve done for Audrey, it?s wonderful.?

Cars have evolved to go faster ? but humans haven't

Faster, safer modern cars may make higher speed limits appealing, but the human body is still stuck in the slow lane

Whenever a speed limit change is proposed there is a good deal of public debate. The British government's recent call to allow drivers to do 80 miles per hour (129 kilometres per hour) on some of the country's fastest roads, instead of the current 70mph (113kph), is no different.

Should we raise the speed limit to take advantage of the greater capabilities of modern vehicles? Would this increase casualties? How should limits be enforced? These are just a few of the questions that provoke endless debate. Speed is not the only factor in crashes ? no one would argue otherwise. However, its importance for public health is that it is easily experimented on. Contrast that with driving while tired, which is less easy to measure and change.

There is no doubt that over the past 30 years vehicles have evolved to go faster with consummate ease. Before taking full advantage of this we might consider whether we, the drivers, have evolved much over the same period. Unfortunately our reaction times are not any faster, nor are our bodies any better at withstanding the forces involved in a crash.

A human who tries really hard can sprint at about 30kph. To reach even that speed, we have to put lots of energy into the system, our heart is pumping, we have the wind in our face and massive experience of movement ? in other words, we have overwhelming biological feedback to tell us just how fast we are going.

Velocity blindness

When we drive a car, however, the energy input is the small movement of a large toe. The output, in contrast, is that we can easily travel at more than four times the maximum speed for which we have been designed ? and with almost no experience of movement. The feedback to the brain from the legs, heart and lungs when we are driving is effectively that of no movement. Add to that the fact that prolonged exposure to speed reduces perceived velocity and that speed cues such as engine noise are systematically eliminated in modern vehicles, and it is no wonder there are some challenges in obeying limits.

We have the speedometer, of course, but this hardly provides visceral feedback ? and, bizarrely, about half of the dial is devoted to illegal speeds. It is rare for any other product to broadcast its illegal capabilities like this.

For years, the general message from governments has been that, for safety reasons, a reduction in speed is good because it reduces casualties. But this has been difficult to get across. Messages such as "at 35mph you are twice as likely to kill someone as at 30mph" may be hard to appreciate if you assume that energy increases linearly with speed ? in fact, it rises with the square of the velocity.

The transfer of that energy to the human body is the problem. The evidence on the relationship between speed and casualties is unambiguous whichever way it is examined. For example, raising the 55mph (89kph) speed limit to 65mph (105kph) in the US was estimated to have increased fatalities by 15 per cent (American Journal of Public Health, vol?79, p?1392). So what criteria should we use to define a limit? Two present themselves: functionality and survivability.

Survival speeds

Different types of road have different functions: access roads, which border residential and shopping areas; distribution roads, which need more entry and exit points; and through roads such as freeways and motorways which are for uninterrupted movement, with limited entry and exit.

Survivability refers to the body's capacity to tolerate the energy transfer in accidents. Evidence shows that on access roads, where crashes involving pedestrians are likely, a 20mph (30kph) limit is appropriate. On distribution roads, where side impacts are likely ? when a car might ram into the side of another that is pulling out of a side road, for instance ? the limit should be 30mph (50kph). In situations without pedestrians and where side impacts and head-on collisions are improbable ? motorways and freeways ? the limit should be 60 to 70mph (100 to 110kph).

Getting drivers to stick to limits, be they new or old ones, is another thing. Deterrence is an obvious route. Deterrence theory, derived from the work of the 18th-century judicial theorist Cesare Beccaria and the 19th-century philosopher and social reformer Jeremy Bentham, emphasises the certainty, severity and imminence of punishment. The certainty of punishment has the clearest deterrent effect, which is problematic for speed enforcement because it relies on an uncertain police presence.

This can be solved by speed cameras, which have themselves stimulated a good deal of media debate. Controversy has focused on whether their goal is safety or revenue generation. Policy-makers can tackle this by emphasising casualty reduction: for instance, they can place cameras at accident locations, allocate fines to road safety, advertise the accident location by highly visible cameras and prior warning signs, and offer education for first-time offenders.

Chris Christie Supports Amnesty for Illegal Aliens | Happy Harbor ...

October 4, 2011 (MMD Newswire) ? - Americans for Legal Immigration PAC is pointing out the hypocrisy of New Jersey Governor and potential presidential candidate Chris Christie?s support for Comprehensive Immigration Reform Amnesty for illegal aliens. This while he is bashing others like Texas Governor Rick Perry for supporting licenses and in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.

Chris Christie defeated Democratic Governor Corzine after making a top campaign issue of Corzine?s support for licenses and in-state tuition for illegal aliens, both of which are opposed by approximately 80% of all Americans, including majorities of blacks, Democrats, and legal Hispanics according to numerous polls.

Christie?s tough language on illegal immigration issues, and his public apology, led New Jersey voters to forgive him for his comments in 2008 claiming ?being in this country without proper documentation is not a crime.?

After using the issue to defeat an incumbent Governor, Chris Christie then proclaimed his support for Comprehensive Immigration Reform Amnesty and a massive change in existing federal law to accommodate millions of illegal immigrants.

?While bashing Rick Perry for supporting in-state tuition for illegal immigrants, Chris Christie has shown his support for granting them Amnesty and then subsequently licenses and in-state tuition,? said William Gheen of ALIPAC. ?If Chris Christie steps into the presidential race, he is going to take the ?Perry Plunge? once both his hypocrisy and support for Amnesty for illegal aliens is revealed to GOP voters.?

Americans for Legal Immigration PAC is America?s largest and most active political action group advising voters on issues involving the top issue of illegal immigration and border security. Founded on 9/11/2004, ALIPAC has over 40,000 supporters nationwide, is quoted in national and local media each month, and has achieved top tier web traffic and presence.

ALIPAC is placing both Rick Perry and Chris Christie into their 2012 candidate rankings as AMNESTY supporters.

?Mega-wealth election buyers are racing behind the scenes to find a Republican actor such as Rick Perry or Chris Christie who will talk tough on illegal immigration, while supporting Comprehensive and Dream Amnesties that would eventually destroy America,? said William Gheen. ?The American public, both Democrats and Republicans, simply want a president who will honor the US Constitution and existing federal laws passed by Congress instead of supporting this globalist Amnesty agenda.?

Several new polls indicate that Texas Governor Rick Perry?s campaign for president is collapsing due to his comments in support of in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.

Americans for Legal Immigration PAC is the first national organization to accurately predict the ?Perry Plunge? in the polls in a national press release issued right after the first Florida GOP debate at 10:03 pm ET on Monday, September 12, 2011.

While the first release received little coverage outside of the Miami Herald, which tried to counter ALIPAC?s prediction, the second release after the second debate titled ?Rick Perry Is Finished? (September 23, 2011) received wide national coverage. ALIPAC recently conducted a highly successful protest of Rick Perry in Charlotte, NC, and is planning more protests of Perry to inform voters of his unpopular stances.

New polling data is confirming ALIPAC?s prediction as accurate. ALIPAC is now making a new prediction that Chris Christie will suffer a similar political fate as Rick Perry if elites working behind the scenes push Christie to enter the presidential race.

?The traitors who are responsible for the illegal immigration invasion of America that is costing many Americans their jobs, homes, taxpayer resources, voting rights, and sometimes their very lives, are trying to bring in their asset Chris Christie now that Rick Perry is politically nonviable,? said William Gheen. ?We will be ready to expose their next puppet. We are not going back to the days of George W. Bush without one hell of a political fight!?

A large collection of national polls which illustrate American voter opposition to benefits and any form of Comprehensive or Dream Amnesty supported by politicians like Chris Christie, Barack Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Newt Gingrich, and others can be found at http://www.alipac.us/polls_surveys_opinions.html
