Actual vs. Wall St. Expectations: BRCD reported adjusted net income of 16 cents per share. By that measure, the company beat the mean estimate of 6 cents per share. It beat the average revenue estimate of $527.1 million.

Quoting Management: ?Brocade achieved outstanding results in Q4 that were led by record revenues for our Ethernet business, fast adoption of our 16 Gbps Fibre Channel products, improvements in profitability, and a record cash flow quarter from operations,? said Michael Klayko, CEO of Brocade. ?These strong performances demonstrate that we are executing well on our long-term strategy. Looking at FY 12, we plan to leverage this momentum along with our highly differentiated innovation strategy, expanding product portfolio, and our strong routes to market.?

The company?s loss in the latest quarter follows profits in the previous three quarters. The company reported a profit of $1.9 million in the third quarter, a profit of $27.6 million in the second quarter and $27.2 million in the first.

The company beat estimates last quarter after being in line with expectations in the third quarter with net income of 5 cents per share.

Looking Forward: Expectations for the first quarter of the next fiscal year have not changed from 8 cents. The average estimate for the fiscal year is 29 cents per share, down from 30 cents ninety days ago.

I liked to Shaughnessy earlier, so why not link to Murray Chass?

He spoke with former union head Marvin Miller ? they?re bffs, you know ? about the MLBPA agreeing to submit to HGH blood testing in the new collective bargaining agreement. Miller is perplexed by the union agreeing to this and to earlier concessions regarding drug testing:

??I don?t understand the rationale of this. I don?t understand the rationale of a lot of things. It?s an unproven test. We don?t know the basis for this. I haven?t heard any rationale for this and there is no rationale for it ??I understand Selig wanting it, but I don?t understand why the union would agree to it ? It?s not a step forward ??They didn?t get anything when they agreed to reopen testing when there was no reopening in the agreement to test. I can?t imagine anything appreciable to make you think twice about saying yes.?

Setting aside that Marvin Miller is 94-years-old and may not completely have his finger on the pulse of what?s going down in labor relations at the moment, he has a narrow technical point regarding negotiation tactics. You don?t, traditionally, give something up in this way. And he?s right that the HGH test is kind of a joke.

But Miller?s position is also some pretty old thinking when it comes to baseball labor relations. ?What the union finally figured out ? too late, but did figure out ? was that there was a serious downside to the public thinking that everyone was on ?roids. And that that perception was going to eventually translate to lower confidence in the game and ultimately lower revenues.

So, like Miller, you could just view this through the lens of owner-player politics. ?Or you could see the longer game in which the players giving in on drug testing was actually in their own financial interests. And that?s before you talk about how, you know, getting on board with drug testing was the right thing to do anyway.

I agree with Miller that the HGH test thing is kind of silly ? I?ve spoken about why before ? but I don?t think you can give the union much hell for agreeing to go down this road, even if they?re doing it for reasons other than ?HGH is bad, mmmkay??

Chicago mayor rallies Obama support in Iowa (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel launched an ardent defense of President Barack Obama in Iowa on Saturday, telling local Democrats that in order to create security for the middle class, "we just can't cut our way to prosperity."

Obama's former chief of staff rallied about 1,300 people during the Iowa Democratic Party's largest annual fundraiser in Des Moines. Emanuel told the crowd that Republicans want to solve the nation's debt problem only through spending cuts, while Obama favors a balanced approach of cuts and tax increases.

"To create true middle-class security, we can't just cut our way to prosperity," Emanuel said. "We must out-innovate, out-educate and out-build the world."

Emanuel said Obama has made crucial, tough decisions based on his principles to help the country ? and not in an attempt to lay the groundwork for a second term in the White House. And he asked the crowd whose judgment they wanted leading the country during such a critical economic time.

"In the next four years, there will be more challenges and more crises that will determine the economic vitality of the middle class and the economic future of this country," Emanuel said. "Whose character, whose judgment do you want in that office?"

Obama has a solid history in Iowa. His surprising win in the state's precinct caucuses four years ago launched him on the road to the White House, and he easily carried the state in the 2008 general election.

Emanuel's appearance in the key early-caucus state was a chance for Democrats to grab attention from several Republican presidential candidates making their case to social conservatives across town. Emanuel used the opportunity to criticize GOP candidate Mitt Romney, even though Romney wasn't in Iowa.

The mayor cited the sharply different views that Obama and Romney had on rescuing the auto industry and propping up the nation's financial system. He argued that Obama's views have been proven right, while Romney's stance to not offer federal financial assistance would have destroyed the two key industries.

Emanuel also said Romney has flip-flopped in his political views, such as taking a more conservative stance on abortion and gun control.

"Mitt Romney says he's a man of steadiness and consistency. If that's true, then I'm a linebacker for the Chicago Bears," said the slim, 5-foot-8 1/2 mayor.

In an interview before the event, Emanuel said he was looking forward to the prospect of a lengthy, heated Republican primary race ? and the exposure it gives to the GOP candidates.

"I think a lot of people want to see it over quickly, and I don't think they're going to get that," he said.

Sounding the populist theme that Obama has been offering in recent weeks, Emanuel also said the president is focused less on the difficulty of his tasks as president and more on the struggles of the American middle class.

"He continues to help them try to get their feet back on the ground. That's the struggle he's worried about, not his struggle," Emanuel said.
