6-time Pro Bowler Taylor to retire after season (AP)

DAVIE, Fla. ? Linebacker Jason Taylor walked across the locker room brushing his teeth, then ducked into the equipment room to rinse and spit. Minutes later he tried to muster a smile for a cluster of TV cameras.

It was time to call it quits.

The NFL's active sacks leader said he'll retire after this season, his 15th in the NFL and his 13th with the Miami Dolphins. Taylor has contemplated retirement in years past only to be lured back, but now he insists his mind's made up.

"Sunday's my last game," he said. "I might even change my cell phone number so they can't reach me."

The 37-year-old Taylor, who made the announcement following practice Wednesday, ranks sixth all-time with 139 1/2 sacks. He has six fumble returns for touchdowns, an NFL record.

He'll conclude his career Sunday against the New York Jets. It'll be his 204th game with the Dolphins, which ranks second to Dan Marino's 242.

"His contributions on the field as one of the greatest players in team history will be remembered by Dolphins fans for years to come," owner Stephen Ross said in a statement. "He will always remain an integral part of the Dolphin family."

Taylor has had three stints with the Dolphins, who drafted him in the third round in 1997. He also played for the Redskins in 2008 and the Jets in 2010.

"In my opinion, that's a no-brainer Hall of Fame player," Jets coach Rex Ryan said. "He was a phenomenal teammate here. We only had him the one year, yet he affected the team so positively. I'm proud that I had a chance to coach him."

Taylor helped the Jets reached the AFC championship game. He never made it to the Super Bowl, and his final playoff game with the Dolphins was way back in 2001.

"If there was one regret I have as an athlete, it's that I didn't get a chance to bring a championship to Miami," he said.

Taylor said his wife was surprised he's hanging it up. But the Dolphins (5-10) are nearing the end of another disappointing season and about to embark on a coaching search, which influenced his decision.

"The last few weeks I thought about it more," he said. "It has been a tough year. This organization is going to make some changes. This is the right time for me to go and allow this organization to grow and improve."

Taylor made the Pro Bowl six times, spending much of his career at end before switching to linebacker. He has been used mostly in passing situations this season and has seven sacks this season, which ranks second on the team.

"He's a great leader, a great ambassador for the city of Miami, and a great player in this league," teammate Jake Long said. "He'll definitely be missed."

His best season was in 2006, when he was chosen NFL Defensive Player of the Year. That season he had 13 1/2 sacks, forced 10 fumbles and returned two interceptions for scores.

Taylor has scored nine touchdowns, the most by any player whose primary position was the defensive line and who entered the league after 1970. He has four safeties, which ties him for fourth in NFL history. Taylor holds a Dolphins record with 27 fumble recoveries.

He has been honored many times for his work in the community, and his South Florida foundation has contributed more than $2 million in grants and services to help children.

"He's a tremendous role model," teammate Kendall Langford said. "He is always giving, giving, giving."

The foundation will help keep Taylor busy in retirement. He has also dabbled in acting, and earned runner-up honors on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" in 2008.

"I look forward to the future. There are a few irons in the fire," Taylor said. "Nothing is going to replace professional football. You can't find it on the golf course or anywhere. There's no place like an NFL locker room. Those guys become your family for seven months of the year. You won't replace that. But I'll find something else."

Benjamin "Ben" Campbell Raybould, Albuquerque, New Mexico

Benjamin "Ben" Campbell Raybould, born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania on February 21, 1922, to Jane Treasure Thomas and William Arthur Raybould. He was the youngest of 4 children, William, Harry, Elizabeth and Ben. Ben graduated from Pottsville High School in 1940. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was part of the commissioning crew of the aircraft carrier USS Essex, and honorably served in the South Pacific as an Aviation Mechanic/Second Class CC, and also served as an aircraft gunner. In 1949, Ben moved to New Mexico and worked for the Mountain States Telephone Company for 35 years. Beginning his employment as a lineman, he ultimately found his niche in the marketing department for commercial and government contracts. Ben met his future wife, Edith (Ede) Davenport, while singing in the choir at Central United Methodist Church, and they were married on August 5, 1951, at the same church. Ben and Ede shared over 60 wonderful years together and were blessed with four children and six grandchildren. Admired for his beautiful tenor voice, Ben was asked numerous times to sing at weddings and funerals, and he frequently soloed at both Trinity UMC and St. John's UMC. During the Christmas season, his family especially holds dear the memory of his singing of "Oh Holy Night!" at Christmas Eve services. Although Ben loved blessing the Lord and others with his musical giftings, following his retirement he found extraordinary fulfillment in service to others. He was a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels. While his clients were appreciative of warm meals, they were more appreciative of his endearing laugh, warm conversation and untiring kindness. Ben also gave of his time and energy to install Life Lines for Presbyterian Hospital and volunteer at the Pioneer Telephone Company Museum. Before his health declined, he was an active member of the Men's Group at St. John's. Ben was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Those who knew him cherished him and will forever hold his memory and noble example of generous living close to their hearts. Ben is survived by his beloved wife, Ede; his children, David and Linda Raybould and their daughters, Megan and Kathryn, Mark Raybould, Bob and Heidi Raybould and their daughters, Kelsey and Kendra, and Mark and Lisa Dalton and their children, Mallory and Benjamin. He is also survived by his older sister, Elizabeth, as well as several nephews and nieces, all in Pennsylvania. New Microsoft Office 365 Security Features Highlight Cloud Computing Difficulties

Microsoft recently announced that it has succeeded in adopting a number of security certifications and standards for its Office 365 products. These new Office 365 security features are designed to help Microsoft expand into the international cloud computing space, as regulatory compliance and security become larger barriers preventing cloud app adoption.

Office 365.png

The Issue With Worldwide Cloud Computing

Like many things in the business world these days, cloud computing has run up against a wall of regulation from a variety of sources. Since the cloud operates without borders, a company's information can be physically stored in one country while the company exists in another. This can cause some interesting regulatory issues, as data protection and privacy laws in one country may be broken by storing data in a second country where local law gives authorities unfettered access to stored data.

As this Wired article points out, the largest current sticking point is between European companies and U.S-based cloud providers, due to the amount of data control that the PATRIOT Act gives U.S. authorities. A recent anecdote from Microsoft tells of a U.K. company that was ready to adopt Office 365, when its lawyers pulled the plug over issues surrounding the PATRIOT Act.

Of course, the issue goes much deeper than one piece of legal code in one country, as this type of regulatory nightmare is only going to get larger as the cloud grows. The concept behind the cloud is that the data's physical location doesn't matter, only that the client has access to that information, but in reality, that data does exist on a physical server somewhere and thusly falls under local jurisdictions.

New Office 365 Security Features

As noted in this Seattle Times article, Microsoft is trying to allay fears of regulatory nightmares by announcing a number of new security features and standards. First, Office 365 received ISO/IEC 27001 certification, which requires a yearly independent audit centered around data security. Microsoft says that it's the first major cloud-based productivity service to achieve this certification, although Google Apps has a similar, albeit slightly different, certification.

Microsoft also announced the launch of the Office 365 Trust Center, which is designed, in part, to help health care organizations meet Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements. HIPAA involves reporting security breaches and ensuring business partners will safeguard the data they have access to.

Finally, Microsoft announced that Office 365 will meet the standard of the European "model clauses," which are designed to keep data secure even if that data is physically stored on servers outside of Europe. Additionally, as this ZDNet article states, the new Trust Center will allow companies to specify the physical location of their data, to allay concerns about competing regulation.

It should be noted that while issues with the PATRIOT Act are at the forefront of the overall problem, Microsoft never mentioned the regulation. This almost certainly means that these new security features are designed to reduce fear, rather than provide a true cure for the problem. It's unfortunate that certain regulations would cause so many problems in connecting the world together, but until businesses can prove to their governments how harmful these regulations are, the issue isn't going to go away.

In fact, with cloud computing growing exponentially, you can expect the issue to only get worse in the near-term, as governments are sure to be hesitant to change policies because of technologies they clearly don't yet understand. Microsoft may have taken a nice first step in this battle, but every company involved in cloud computing needs to step up and start protecting data from wayward regulation if this problem is to ever go away.

NBA: Knicks Claim Former Harvard PG Jeremy Lin Off Waivers

The Knicks have claimed former Harvard PG Jeremy Lin off waivers, according to a league source. Lin spent his rookie year in Oakland, but was waived by the Warriors, and new coach Mark Jackson, on Dec. 9. ?Read more after the jump.

@Shay_Marie x @gametimegirl

The Rockets picked Lin up, but waived him Sunday to clear roster space in order to sign Samuel Dalembert. Lin, 23, was undrafted out of Harvard but appeared in 29 games for the Warriors as a rookie last season, averaging 2.6 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists per contest.

?We?ve always liked him as a player,? Knicks coach Mike D?Antoni said. ?Very quick. He defends pretty well. But he can really get in the lane and distribute the basketball. We haven?t seen him for a couple of years, but when we worked him out, we liked him.?

Lin has a non-guaranteed contract ? worth about $850,000. That means when either Baron Davis (back injury) or Iman Shumpert (knee sprain) get healthy, the Knicks could decide to waive Lin and open up a roster spot if they feel the yen to sign forward Kenyon Martin. The former Net is eligible to sign an NBA contract in March as the terms of his Chinese Basketball Association buyout.

D?Antoni said he believes Lin will meet up with the Knicks for Wednesday morning?s shootaround. Asked when he thinks he?d be ready to use Lin, D?Antoni replied, ?A little of it will depend upon injuries. He?s right now our third point guard, so if someone wakes up with a cold, he?s playing a lot. If not, then we?ll see.?

That will not be the situation on Wednesday when backup point guard Mike Bibby (back spams) is set to make his Knicks debut.

?He?s good. He said he felt good. Looked good,? D?Antoni said. ?But yeah, he?s ready to roll.?

Lin appeared in 20 games for the Reno Bighorns of the D-League in 2010-11, averaging 18.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game.

Blowout win over Mavericks backs up NBA commissioner's description of Heat

Five garbage-time minutes remained in Sunday's holiday spanking when Mark Cuban finally got LeBron James' attention.

Play was in. The clock was running.

The Heat had the ball and a 20-point lead on their way to a 105-94 victory on a shockingly easy Christmas afternoon.

But that didn't stop the Mavericks owner, arms folded tightly across his gray T-shirt as he slumped in his usual baseline seat, from launching a quick salvo.

Judging from the wry smile on Cuban's face and the way he shook his head in mock resignation, he wasn't heckling LeBron.

Far from it.

More like crying "uncle."

The way the rest of the NBA could soon be if this sort of thing continues.

"Cuban's a good guy, man," LeBron said after his 37-point showing. "I'm not going to tell you what he said."

Not even a hint?

"Ask him what he said," LeBron said, laughing aloud at the thought. "It's all good."

Last year's championship banner was raised to the rafters before Sunday's tipoff. It was a 10-minute ceremony the Heat wisely chose to skip before coming out and putting the rest of the basketball world on notice.

You thought the Heat were dominant at times last season in coming within two wins of the NBA title?

You thought they looked overwhelming during the first three playoff rounds, when they dropped just one game apiece to the Sixers, Celtics and Bulls?

That was nothing compared to how they played for much of this season opener at American Airlines Center.

Dwyane Wade (26 points) was the only other Heat player in double figures. Chris Bosh missed seven of nine shots from the field.

Yet that hardly mattered with LeBron tossing in turnaround bank shots with his left hand.

Not to mention the sort of team defense and rebounding the Heat put on display.

Those factors led to 31 fastbreak points and a 35-point bulge after the break that felt twice that large.

They held the Mavericks to 29-percent shooting in the first half, more than doubled them up on the boards and turned what was supposed to be a victory lap into a public flogging.

Watching it all from courtside was David Stern, kind enough not to void this Christmas clunker and declare a do-over.

Earlier, the NBA commissioner had used three prime adjectives to describe this Heat team.

"Interesting" was the first.

"Fun" was the second.

Later, he tossed in "formidable" for good measure.

Gee, ya think?

"Those are great words," Wade said. "Coming from the commissioner, those are great words for us as a team. We appreciate the kind words."

No more finger-wagging between those two.

Basketball is back, and with it the Heat's pursuit of an NBA crown that nearly became theirs six months ago, probably a year ahead of schedule.

Now along comes Superfriends: Version 2.0, and even Stern seems to be coming around.

"Those are accurate descriptions of who we are," James Jones said. "Whenever you have three big stars, you're formidable, and we're a unique, interesting team because of the personalties we have. Our guys are tremendous athletes but they're also charismatic, soft-spoken and electric."

Who needs a Thesaurus with this guy around?

Newcomer Shane Battier also endorsed Stern's word choices.

"I would agree with all of those," Battier said. "Pretty apropos. This is a dynamic team in more ways than one. The key word is 'team.' "

Then there was LeBron, who hasn't always felt like one of Stern's favorites.

"He said that about us?" LeBron said, a bit stunned for a moment. "What does that last word mean? I didn't go to college."

Formidable? Uh, that means "inspiring fear or respect through being impressively large, powerful, intense or capable."

All of which applied Sunday.

"OK," LeBron said, nodding. "I appreciate the words of kindness from the commissioner."

A trophy six months hence would be even better.

SC voter ID law blocked by Justice Department

The Obama administration on Friday blocked a new South Carolina law that requires voters to have photo identification because of concerns it would hurt minorities' ability to cast a ballot.

    1. Payroll tax cut OK'd by Congress, signed by Obama

Shortly after Congress approved a two-month renewal of payroll tax cuts, President Obama signed a bill formalizing the extension and won a convincing victory for his jobs agenda.

Republican Gov. Nikki Haley in May signed into law a measure that says voters must show a driver's license, passport or military identification along with their voter registration card in order to vote.

Under the law, anyone who wants to vote but does not have a photo identification must obtain a new voter registration card that includes a photo. A birth certificate or passport can be used to prove identity.

The Justice Department said the requirement could harm the right to vote of tens of thousands of people, noting that just over a third of the state's minorities who are registered voters did not have a driver's license needed to cast a ballot.

"The state's data demonstrate that non-white voters are both significantly burdened" by the law and "disproportionately unlikely to possess the most common types of photo identification" needed, Thomas Perez, head of the Justice Department's civil rights division, said in a letter to the state.

The state can appeal the decision at the Justice Department or in federal court. Attempts to reach a spokesman for Haley were not immediately successful.

Democrats have described the law as a "voter suppression" effort against minorities who historically do not always have photo identification cards. Republicans countered that their goal was to prevent voter fraud.

However, Perez said that South Carolina's submission to the Justice Department did not offer any evidence of voter fraud that was not addressed by existing law and that "arguably could be deterred by requiring voters to present only photo identification at the polls."

The Justice Department said plans by state officials to provide exemptions to the photo identification requirement were incomplete and vague. The state also has not finalized education and training materials.

If those issues were addressed, the Justice Department said the state could resubmit its plans and officials would consider revising its position.

The Justice Department move marks an escalation in the battle between the Obama administration and Republicans who control the legislatures in some states just 11 months before the 2012 presidential and congressional elections.

Obama lost South Carolina in the 2008 presidential race by a nine-point margin to his Republican opponent Sen. John McCain.

Under the landmark 1965 Voting Rights Act, certain states like South Carolina must seek approval from the Justice Department or the federal courts for changes made to state voting laws and boundaries for voting districts.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder earlier this month said his team was reviewing changes to voting laws in other states including Florida and Texas and will challenge any that are discriminatory in violation of the federal voting rights law.

"The reality is that ? in jurisdictions across the country ? both overt and subtle forms of discrimination remain all too common," he said in a speech in Austin, Texas.

The Justice Department has also challenged a new election map drawn by Republicans in Texas, arguing that it does not fairly represent the exponential growth in Hispanic voters. Hispanics largely have supported Democrats in past elections.
