MOBILE, Alabama ? Excel Principal Marty Hanks wants his new football coach to commit to an extended tour of duty in the small Monroe County town.
Rusty Mason coached Excel for only one season ? arriving in July and commuting from Mobile ? before returning to the Port City last month as the new coach at Class 5A Faith Academy.
As Hanks conducts his second football coaching search in less than a year, he has a better idea of what he's looking for in a leader for the football program.
"We are looking for a coach who brings energy, excitement and discipline to our program," Hanks said in an e-mail responding to questions about the search. "We are also looking for someone who will be here for multiple years and get us back to where we want to be."
Mason's successor will be the school's fourth head coach in the last five years, which is a prime reason Hanks is looking for stability.
Last summer, Hanks took over as principal and immediately had to hire a new coach. Now, however, with more time to prepare for the 2012 season, he said he's received more interest in the vacancy.
"We have had a lot of interest this time around as compared to last July," Hanks said in the e-mail. "I feel like our school and community has a lot to offer to the right person.
The new coach takes over an Excel program hasn't won a playoff game since 1998, although the Panthers have advanced to the playoffs in three of the last seven seasons. Excel finished 3-7 last year and ended 2011 on a four-game losing skid.
Excel played in the championship game in 1989, and it's the high school alma mater of Alabama and NFL legend Lee Roy Jordan.
