Pinoy Michael Martinez has Achieved International Caliber in Ice ...

Despite government?s lack of support?

?And my other problem was that I was already forewarned by the PSU/NSA that if I bring my complaint of no support to the media, my son may not be given anymore international assignments.? ? Maria Teresa Martinez

At a time when most kids his age remain comfy inside the cocoons of parental dependency or otherwise preoccupied with fads or even mischief, Michael has been into rigid training of at least six hours each day ? and school studies in between ? in his efforts to make a better person of himself. In the process he has also been able to put the Philippines in the world ice skating map.

pinoywatchdog-michael-martinez-gold-medalsMichael was into recreational skating starting when he was eight-and-a-half years old. He had his first competitive event in Colorado Springs in June 2008 where he garnered several gold medals.

In October 2009 he won gold in all of his first major competitions under the International Skating Union (ISU) in Slovakia, Slovenia and Austria. He is also the undefeated champ of Asian junior figure skating since 2008 and had garnered many other international and local plums.

In September, last year, Michael placed eighth in the Junior Grand Prix of the World Figure Skating Championships held in Brisbane. In June of that same year he received the Hollin?s Trophy in Sydney. In the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games (WYOG) held from January 16-22, 2012, in Innsbruck, Austria, Michael was third in the short program and seventh in the free skate.

At age 15, Michael had amassed a total of 188 medals and trophies from both local and international competitions ? 146 of them gold medals. He has also a gold medal and five others won in local gymnastics.

Michael was in Belarus early this month competing in the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships 2012 and was quite impressed of the venue. In addition to the main ice ring, the huge sports arena has a separate rink for hockey, another for the public to practice, indoor speed skating tracks, medical facilities for athletes and more amenities. There are reportedly two other ice rinks built by the government so that their athletes can train with modern facilities.

?In Philippines,? Michael noted in his Facebook page, ?we only have 1 Olympic size ice rink in the whole country. & our ice rink is inside the shopping mall & it?s mainly for public skating. We are paying ice time but there is no freestyle session, so high level skaters cannot practice there.?

At that time he had just completed the junior men event and was feeling low because of his 15th place in a field of 40 skaters. He should have been ranked higher because his technical scores were the 8th highest, he said. Earlier he placed third in the preliminary rounds and sixth in the short program.

If the above feats and achievements of Michael are not daunting enough, fancy this: Snow in tropical Philippines is as exotic as, say, sighting the mythic Sasquatch. In fact the only ice most Filipinos would see in their lifetimes are the cubed ones we buy to cool our drinks. That being the case, Michael is further handicapped by sub-zero conditions as had occurred in Innsbruck and Belarus. He said of the latter, ?Coming from a tropical country, negative 15 Celsius is too cold for me.?

pinoywatchdog-michael-martinezAnd then there are the injuries. Michael was quoted in one interview saying, ?Ang ayaw ko lang sa skating: ma-injured.? (The only thing I dislike in skating is getting injured.) And to reduce the incidence of injury, Michael cross-trains in gymnastics, plyometrics and trampoline. Still skating is an injury-prone sport and in addition to being asthmatic, Michael had experienced many falls, repeated injuries and torn ligaments during trainings and competitions.

In Merano, Italy, for example, he had to withdraw from the competition because a thigh was pierced by the skate blade during a bad fall and he had to be rushed to the hospital because of profuse bleeding. In October-November of 2010 he missed several competitions because of ankle injuries that had him in cast for three months. In the recent Belarus games he hurt an ankle which gave him so much pain during practices and programs. Additionally he had sprained a knee and pulled back muscles that required three days of treatment in that country.

Michael is supposed to compete in the Asian Junior Challenge to be held in China this coming April 6 but had to withdraw due to injuries (sprain/swollen ankle) from a very bad fall/twisting of his ankle during his last day of practice in Anaheim before the flight back to Philippines.

Lip service from the government

During a press conference in Nov. 4, 2011, Manuel Veguillas of the Philippine Skating Union (PSU) grandly proclaimed the country?s choice of Michael Martinez as the lone representative to the Olympic Games in Austria: ?We?re blessed to have someone as talented as Michael to represent the country in the Winter Olympics.?

In an exchange of notes with Michael, however, PinoyWatchdog learned that the Philippine government has been nickel-and-diming its support to an athlete who has done much to bring honor and prestige to the country.

Wrote Michael: ?Nung lumaban nga ho ako sa Olympic qualifying last year, I just borrowed the coach of Thailand, kasi wala akong coach hindi kaya ni mama na gumasta para sa coach. Then nung lumaban ho ako sa Youith Olympics last January, wala rin ho akong coach uli. Si mama lang ang tumayong coach ko. Ayaw talaga nilang magsupport. Nung matapos yung Olympics dun lang nagabot ng konting pera ang PSC $700 at shoemart $850 para lang masabing tumulong sila kuno. Its too late dahil dapat tinulungan nila ako sa training ko for Olympics. Then again dito sa world championship, again ni singko wala silang itinulong uli?? (When I competed to qualify for the Olympics last year, I just borrowed the coach of Thailand because my mom could not afford to hire a coach. Then when I competed in the Youth Olympics last January, I again didn?t have a coach. My mother had to stand in as my coach. They really don?t want to give support. It was only after the Olympics that PSC handed out $700 and Shoemart $850 just so it can be said that they were helping. It was too late because they should have helped me during the training for the Olympics. Then again in this world championship, not even five centavos was given to help?)

His mother, Maria Teresa Martinez, agrees. Many times Michael had participated in international competitions without a coach because they could not afford to hire one. In an email dated March 13 to PinoyWatchdog.com, she said: ?I do not know who can help me bring my son?s case to the office of the President. I do not have any more money to support his training, and I feel so bad for my son because he had proven that he can defeat skaters from traditional skating countries, and he wants to qualify & compete in the 2014 regular winter Olympics, but we have no more budget for that. And my other problem was that I was already forewarned by the PSU/NSA that if I bring my complaint of no support to the media, my son may not be given anymore international assignments.?

In another note dated March 22 she said, ?? he (Michael) is not adequately supported/funded by Philippine sports agencies concerned ? the Philippine Skating Union (PSU), the national sports association for figure skating, and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). The only money they, PSU & PSC, have given so far was the daily allowance in Innsbruck during the youth Olympic games in Jan., 2012. Phil. Olympic Committee (POC) is helping to get a refund of Michael?s Youth Olympic training expenses from PSC (training expenses in Nov. 7, 2011 till Jan. 7, 2012) but there is no refund until today.?

On May 26, Mrs. Martinez wrote about Michael: ?His skate shoes was so much worn out (he was using it for more than a year, while normally skaters in his level change shoes every 4 to 5 months) but since we were trying to save money on very expensive skate shoes that currently costs $1,200 (with blades) then Michael was forced to skate (and compete in several prestigious competitions including Olympics and world championship) using his worn-out & unstable skate shoes (he was just wrapping the top portion of the shoes with packaging tapes to prevent the shoes from collapsing).?

She is grateful that a donor had come up with the amount to pay for a new pair of skating shoes. The same donor, as well as many other Californians, had also helped in Michael?s U.S. training expenses, she said.

?If Michael was not trained in the U.S., he will never stand a chance in competitive skating,? Mrs. Martinez said. ?But his training abroad depleted our life savings, sad to say. We had also ?exhausted? our relatives and friends who had also been giving financial support in the past, which enabled Michael to compete abroad. Everybody in our family ?sacrifices? just so Michael can continue with his U.S. training. Michael?s sister used to skate too, but had to stop skating due to high cost, same with his 2 nieces.?

?Michael badly needs sponsors for his continuing training in the U.S. since he has more competitions this year starting in July, August and onwards in preparation for his World Championship competition in March, 2013 (which is the qualifying event for the 2014 Winter Olympics),? Mrs. Martinez said. Mother and son Michael are currently in Manila with the latter catching up on school assignments.

Michael is the youngest of three children of Maria Teresa Martinez, a single parent. He will be in fourth year high school of the Muntinlupa School for Child Development in June (home-schooled). The eldest of the brood, Paul Alexis, is 29, married and in charge of the farm business. Maria Angelica, 19, is a full scholar at Colorado College in Colorado Springs pursuing a degree in Economics and Pre-Medicine. A high school graduate from San Beda College in Alabang, Muntinlupa City, she subsequently finished a two-year International Baccalaureate Course at the United World Colleges in Costa Rica.

Scientist Who Oversaw OPERA's Faster-Than-Light Neutrino Study Resigns

New submitter Big Hairy Ian writes with this news from the BBC:
"The head of an experiment that appeared to show subatomic particles traveling faster than the speed of light has resigned from his post. Prof Antonio Ereditato oversaw results that appeared to challenge Einstein's theory that nothing could travel faster than the speed of light. Reports said some members of his group, called OPERA, had wanted him to resign. Earlier in March, a repeat experiment found that the particles, known as neutrinos, did not exceed light speed."

A Retirement Resources Blog for Seniors and Retirees ? HOME ...

by Jean Witt, Wesley Homes Des Moines resident

Although I was born on Easter Sunday, Easter was not celebrated very extensively when I was a child. Family legend has it that Dad had a hard time keeping his mind on the sermon he was preaching that morning ? he kept seeing his wife and new baby in their hospital room instead of the church around him.

Someone told me that because I was born on Easter I would have an Easter birthday every 11 years. I did when I was eleven but never again. Something was wrong with my informant?s calculations. Nevertheless, every year I look at March in my new calendar, just in case.

We have a set of snapshots, taken when my brother Bob and I were little (he about three and I about six) of us with our parents and Grandpa Gleason in the front yard of our ranch house. I suspect they were taken on Easter, as we are all dressed up.

We always had an Easter egg hunt, possibly before we went to town to church.? Mother must have dyed the eggs after we went to bed and put them out before we got up in the morning. After the initial hunt, Bob and I took turns, during the rest of the day, hiding them from each other and finding them all over again. Our front lawn was rarely mowed, and the shaggy grass made perfect nests. Dad raised rabbits, and the neighbors raised chickens and we knew damn well that rabbits didn?t lay eggs.

By the time we were school age we did the dyeing of the eggs on the Saturday before Easter. I think our parents still put them out for us to find. I learned how to make stuffed hard-boiled eggs at a young age. Only eggs that had become badly cracked and dirty from much re-hiding were discarded. Mother also taught us how to blow eggs; they were fragile, but they lasted longer than cooked ones.

I can?t remember much about Easter during our years in Spokane. We usually were invited to dinner out at one of the near-by Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camps, where Dad ? in his role as district chaplain ? conducted a very simple, non-denominational Easter service.

During my college years at WSC [Washington State College, now Washington State University (WSU)] I had a roommate named Shoupy who was very active in a campus youth group. They organized an Easter sunrise service every year, on the east-facing grassy slope behind Agony Hall, the music building. March sunrises in the Palouse country tend to be rather chilly and sometimes frosty affairs, and the Easter services were not very well attended. I went to support Shoupy and fill out the crowd, but even warmly dressed, I found it a bit of an endurance contest.

When our three girls were little, my husband Joe and I also dyed and hid Easter eggs. We had a big yard with lots of good places for hiding eggs. Our daughters soon took over the job of egg dyeing, usually with packaged dyes from the grocery store, but later we experimented with home-made dyes from onion peels, spinach, grape juice, etc. Sometimes we tied the eggs in rags with interestingly shaped leaves, to imprint a design on them.

I have pictures of the girls in their best dresses, as they hunted for Easter eggs. Kids grow so fast that I made a new set of spring dresses every year and sometimes one for myself. One year my mother-in-law beat me to it and bought them dresses all around. She usually came for dinner on Easter.

At present, we have no little kids to hunt Easter eggs, but my oldest daughter still dyes a few to use for table decorations when she has the family to dinner.

Syria says revolt over, but army still shooting

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syria says the year-old revolt to topple President Bashar al-Assad is over, but the army again shelled opposition areas on Saturday and rebels said they would not cease fire until tanks, artillery and heavy weapons are withdrawn.

Washington and Gulf Arab states urged peace envoy Kofi Annan to set a timeline for "next steps" if there is no ceasefire, and Saudi Arabia repeated a call for rebels to be armed.

Annan has said neither measure would be helpful. The former U.N. chief's mission has brought no respite in the killings.

Syria also said it would keep its forces in cities to "maintain security" until it is safe to withdraw in line with the peace deal, which Assad has said he accepts.

Annan's plan says the army must stop violence immediately and be the first to withdraw forces.

"We cannot accept the presence of tanks and troops in armored vehicles among the people," a spokesman for Free Syrian Army commanders inside Syria said.

"We don't have a problem with the ceasefire. As soon as they remove their armored vehicles, the Free Syrian Army will not fire a single shot," Lieutenant Colonel Qassim Saad al-Din told Reuters by telephone from Homs.

A rebel officer in Damascus said separately: "When Assad's gangs stop the shelling and killing of civilians, then our leaders can issue an order to stop operations and we will commit to it to show our good intentions."

Opposition activists reported 25 people killed and five bodies found bearing signs of torture, including two children.

A protest singer in Kafr Ruma was killed when his house was raided. A young man and his sister were shot dead when state forces stormed their village, and a man died of gunshot wounds inflicted during a protest in Damascus.

HOMS UNDER FIRE

Artillery and mortars pounded a pro-opposition part of Homs city, killing one. Ten deaths were reported in Homs province.

"Mortars are falling every minute and the sounds of explosions are shaking the (Khalidiya) neighborhood," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Rocket fire killed a child in the al-Bayyada area of Homs and a man was killed in crossfire in clashes near a checkpoint.

In southern Deraa province, five were killed by machinegun fire in Kharbat Ghazaleh and three died from wounds sustained in clashes on Friday. Rebels killed six soldiers, including a lieutenant colonel in Deir al-Zor, the Observatory said.

Despite the violence, Damascus says it has the upper hand.

"The battle to topple the state is over," Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad al-Makdissi told Syria TV late on Friday. "Our goal now is to ensure stability and create a perspective for reform and development in Syria while preventing others from sabotaging the path of reform."

His assertion follows army victories over rebel strongholds in the cities of Hama, Homs and Idlib, and Assad's acceptance this week of Annan's plan that does not demand he step down.

The political opposition remains divided and prospects of Western-led military intervention are close to zero.

Assad's opponents have not yet formally accepted the plan.

They were due to meet the foreign ministers of allied Western powers, including U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, on Sunday at a "Friends of Syria" conference in Turkey, which provides a safe haven for Syrian rebels.

After Clinton met Gulf foreign ministers in Riyadh on Saturday, they said Annan should set a timeline for unspecified measures should his efforts fail to halt the bloodletting.

"Given the urgency of the joint envoy's mission, (U.S. and Gulf ministers) urged the joint envoy to determine a timeline for next steps if the killing continues," a statement said.

Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal told a news conference with Clinton: "The arming of the opposition is a duty, I think, because it cannot defend itself except with weapons."

WESTERN SCEPTICISM

Assad has endorsed Annan's six-point peace plan, which has the U.N. Security Council's unanimous backing, but Western leaders say the 46-year-old Syrian leader has broken similar promises before and must be judged by actions not words.

Syria's Makdissi said Annan, who met Assad in Damascus on March 10, had acknowledged the government's right to respond to armed violence during the ceasefire phase of the peace plan.

"When security can be maintained for civilians, the army will leave, he said. "This is a Syrian matter."

Annan's plan says Syria must stop putting troops into cities forthwith and begin taking them out.

"The Syrian government should immediately cease troop movement towards, and end the use of heavy weapons in, population centers, and begin pullback of military concentrations in and around population centers," it states.

A sustained end to violence by all sides would be supervised by a U.N. team of around 250 monitors, diplomats said.

Western diplomats say the key to any ceasefire deal lies in the sequencing of the army pullback and ending rebel attacks.

They say the opposition won't feel safe negotiating before the army stops shooting, but also note it would be impractical to expect a complete government pullout before rebels respond.

More than 9,000 people have been killed by Assad's forces during the revolt, according to the United Nations, while Damascus says it has lost about 3,000 security force members.

Western and Arab foreign ministers backing Syrians trying to topple Assad will seek clear endorsement of the Annan plan from the Syrian National Council (SNC), although they themselves doubt whether Assad will genuinely try to implement it.

In Libya a year ago, the West and the Arabs quickly granted recognition to a revolutionary national council as the sole legitimate government of Libya. They are not close to doing the same for the splintered SNC in Syria, diplomats say.

There is also little chance they will agree to arm rebels.

If Assad fails to keep his word, Annan would have to decide whether to call time and tell the United Nations he has failed to make peace through a "Syrian-led process".

The issue would then return to the U.N. Security Council, with increased pressure on Assad's allies Russia and China, which have endorsed Annan's mission, to get tough with Damascus.

Best Buy to close 50 big box US retail stores, open 100 Mobile stand-alone outlets in 2013

Image
Still driving to your local Best Buy to fondle all the latest gadgets before swiping your card, or hopping to the web to pull the trigger? That tradition could be short-lived, if you happen to live near one of 50 big box retail stores that the company plans to shutter in 2013. The move was announced alongside Best Buy's Q4 earnings report, which includes action items aimed to trim $800 million in costs by 2015. The closings will no-doubt come along with staffer reductions, some of whom could be transferred to one of 100 Best Buy Mobile "small format stand-alone stores" set to launch next year. While an unfortunate move for some customers and employees, it does show some foresight on behalf of BBY management, who likely recognize a continuing shift to online purchasing, and a greater emphasis on mobile devices, which require significantly smaller showrooms, cost less to ship and could offer greater margins to boot.

How the Consumer Confidence Index is figured

(AP) ? The Consumer Confidence Index is released each month by the Conference Board, a private research group. It is based on a survey of five questions that haven't changed since the index started in 1967.

The Conference Board surveys about 500 people during the first two weeks of the month, and then comes up with a preliminary number. That number is revised in the following month's report to reflect a total of about 3,000 people. The revision isn't statistically significant, says Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center. For example, September's preliminary figure, announced last month was revised to 46.4 from 45.4.

Each question counts for 20 percent of the index. The responses are used in figuring out the index's two main components:

? PRESENT SITUATION: Assesses how people feel about the economy now. It's made up of two questions, one that asks if the person thinks business conditions are "good," ''bad" or "normal," and one that asks whether jobs are "plentiful," ''not so plentiful" or "hard to get."

? EXPECTATIONS: Assesses respondents' outlook for the next six months. It asks similar questions to the Present Situation about business conditions and job outlook. It also adds a third question on whether the person thinks his or her income will increase, decrease or stay the same.

The index hit its all-time high of 144.7 in 2000. Its record low was 25.3 in February 2009.

Develop An Estate Plan By Creating A Trust | Finance Tips

Based on Dean Betts Jr., Esquire, a Georgetown, DE lawyer at The Betts Legislation Firm, P. A., property planning is significant in case you?re incapacitated or cross on immediately, and oftentimes a trust will be part of that. Here, Betts talks about what a belief can do for you, although he cautions that it is not for everyone?

It is very important develop an estate plan. Most people understand that having a will is significant to ensure that their belongings are passed on to their meant heirs. They don?t always understand, however, that a complete property plan must also embody an Advanced Well being Care Directive, additionally known as a dwelling will, and a Common Durable Energy of Attorney. In addition, Revocable Dwelling Trusts and Testamentary Trusts are also useful tools in the case of property planning.

Benefits of Making a Belief

A belief is a authorized doc that creates an entity that can obtain property and administer that property in accordance with its terms. For example, in case you are leaving money to a minor, you?ll be able to put it right into a belief for when that individual reaches a authorized age and has the maturity to deal with the money. Someone might be named Trustee of that trust to manage the money on behalf of the particular person the cash was left to.

Trusts can be used to shelter assets from collectors and ex-spouses as well as to supply for young or less responsible beneficiaries to take pleasure in the benefits of your presents with out with the ability to frivolously spend the money. However that?s not all ? they may also be helpful in avoiding probate charges and in distributing assets exterior of the probate process. That keeps the knowledge out of the general public view for people who are concerned about preserving their financial issues private.

Sorts of Trusts

Trusts can both be Revocable or Irrevocable Residing Trusts, or Testamentary Trusts provided in an individual?s will. A Revocable Belief is a trust that may be modified during the lifetime of the creator of the trust. That may obviously provide some flexibility in one?s potential to alter the trust document. Once that particular person dies, thought, the Revocable Trust reverts to being an Irrevocable Belief,?stock market news which cannot be changed. Irrevocable Trusts can also be arrange initially in sure circumstances, most often to qualify for presidency benefits. A Testamentary Belief is just a belief that is created by an individual?s will.

In addition to Dwelling and Testamentary Trusts, you may additionally hear rather a lot about Spendthrift Trusts. A Spendthrift Belief is one you would set up for a person who will not be liable for no matter reason. The thought is that you?re leaving the cash to a specific particular person for his benefit, but someone else controls the money for him. That individual known as the Trustee. The Trustee decides what money to provide to the beneficiary, how much, when, and for what purposes.

While trusts can be very useful in protecting belongings from creditors or people who are not accountable with their cash, they are not for everyone. I recommend that you simply consult with an legal professional to find out whether a trust is suitable to your specific situation. Trusts can add a degree of complexity to a scenario, and they may also create certain transactional costs, such as the submitting of separate tax returns and the administration of property by somebody apart from the particular person creating the trust.
