"Women in Love" director Ken Russell dies (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Ken Russell, the British director of "Women in Love" and "The Devils," has died at the age of 84, the BBC said on Monday.

Media reports said he died in his sleep on Sunday night.

Russell began his career with the BBC and went on to direct some of the most controversial and violent films of the 1960s and 70s.

Women in Love, a 1969 adaptation of D. H. Lawrence's novel, became infamous for its nude wrestling scene between actors Alan Bates and Oliver Reed.

Russell was criticized for the level of violence in the 1971 religious drama "The Devils."

Climate May Be Less Sensitive To CO2 Than Previously Thought

Denier: Ah hah! Told you all! Told you all!

Warmist: World is still getting warmer, which means we will all die

Skeptic: These are all extrapolations which are barely worth the paper they are written on

Denier: We need to stop with the environmental programs, they are killing the economy

Warmist: We need to stop polluting, the world is in jeopardy

Denier: It will cost trillion to "save" the world, and it might not even be saved. Anyone who wants to spend that kind of money on a crapshoot is an idiot

Warmist: Can we afford to take a chance? Our choice is trillions now, or quadrillions later. If you don't agree with me, then you are an idiot.

Skeptic: Anybody who wants to take drastic action on the currently available data is an idiot.

DealTalk: Goldman, Morgan Stanley bow out of Unicredit cash call (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? A behind-the-scenes tussle for control over a 7.5 billion euro ($10 billion) share sale by Italy's Unicredit (CRDI.MI) has shown how increasingly tense market conditions are driving a wedge between investment banks.

When the opportunity to be involved in a big deal comes along, banks are usually quick to pile in, with fees, league table credit and client relationships to play for, as well as all-important kudos.

But the risk in taking on any transaction in such uncertain markets, let alone underwriting the shares of an Italian bank at a time when Italy's economy is being sucked ever deeper into the euro zone debt crisis, has brought strains to the fore.

U.S. heavyweights Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morgan considered the risk involved in Unicredit's offering too great for the potential reward on offer, according to a report by IFR, a Thomson Reuters publication.

The 14-strong syndicate of banks appointed will underwrite between 700 million and 850 million euros worth of shares each and will receive fees between 2 and 2.5 percent, said a person close to Unicredit who attended the meeting with the banks.

That source said that when Goldman Sachs was declined a controlling role it then linked up with Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morgan to present themselves as alternative global co-ordinators of the share sale and requested a vote.

When that vote failed, the three U.S. banks walked away. All three later tried to reopen negotiations but only J.P. Morgan was successful in securing an underwriting position, the source said.

Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan declined to comment.

PLAYING HARDBALL

Long-time advisor Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BoAML) (BAC.N) was appointed as global coordinator alongside Mediobanca (MDBI.MI), in which Unicredit owns an 8.7 percent stake, and Unicredit itself.

BNP Paribas, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, Intesa Sanpaolo, JP Morgan, Societe Generale and UBS as joint bookrunners have a lesser role, while ING, RBC, RBS and Santander are co-bookrunners.

As the most senior role in a syndicate, global coordinators have the greatest say in running of the offering -- including, crucially, if and when to push ahead with it.

But having Unicredit and Mediobanca in this position made the U.S. banks wary about how much say they would have, according to other sources close to the negotiations.

One of those sources said the U.S. banks were uncomfortable about relying on risk assessments by banks that were very close to Unicredit.

The three banks were also concerned about BoAML's long-standing ties with Unicredit through Italian lead banker Andrea Orcel, the sources added.

The U.S. banks wanted to increase the financial protection in case the transaction didn't go through, the first source, close to Unicredit, said.

Shares in Unicredit, which holds 40 billion euros of Italian government bonds, have lost half their value this year, leaving its fundraising worth around 50 percent of its market value, and making it painfully dilutive for investors.

A rights issue by fellow Italian bank Banca Popolare di Milano (PMII.MI) last week fell 146 million euros short of its 800 million target, with investors taking up only 81.7 percent of the shares on offer.

"At the last minute they got hung up on a couple of legalistic issues and thought that given the situation is so uncertain they could get some concessions from Unicredit by playing hardball," said a separate source close to the deal .

Such wrangling is not uncommon when companies are under pressure to raise capital.

When Santander launched a 7.2 billion euro rights issue in 2008, at least one bank walked away at the last minute after baulking at the risk of underwriting the deal.

And when Swiss insurer Zurich Financial Services (ZURN.VX) was under pressure to raise capital in 2002, one American bank threatened to pull out of the loss-making insurer's syndicate and tell the press the deal was too risky, in order to impose its conditions, the first source close to Unicredit said.

Yemen: Warplanes kill 80 anti-government tribesmen

(AP) ? A security official says Yemeni warplanes have killed 80 anti-government tribesmen who overran part of a military camp in the Arhab region north of the capital Sanaa.

The official said Saturday that warplanes and artillery had pounded the armed tribesmen for the past 48 hours. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.

There was no independent confirmation of the number of deaths. But a soldier from Yemen's 63rd Brigade who fled the camp says tribesmen had overrun it several days ago.

He spoke by telephone from Arhab, asking not to be identified for fear of government reprisal.

The soldier says about 20 soldiers were killed by the tribesmen.

Rumor: Droid 4 and Galaxy Nexus to be released on December 8 (Digital Trends)

Droid 4 leaked imageThe already crowded Verizon smartphone line up might be getting a few more phones in early December. Droid-Life is reporting that the elusive Galaxy Nexus and the almost unheard of Droid 4 will be released for Verizon on December 8. The report shows a leaked Verizon document displaying the release date for the two LTE phones. Both of the phones will join the Droid RAZR and iPhone 4S as top of the line devices for Verizon?s customers.

There has still been no official word out of Verizon or Motorola about the existence of the Droid 4, so it is surprising that a marque phone would be released without any marketing to date. The rumored specs for the Droid 4 match up very closely with the recently released Droid RAZR. The biggest differences would be that the Droid 4 will have a slide out keyboard and a smaller 4 inch Super AMOLED Advanced display instead of the RAZR?s 4.3 inch display.

We already know pretty much everything about the Galaxy Nexus device, expect the release date and the price. When it was first announced Google said it would be available in the United States sometime in November. Recently we heard that that date has been pushed back to December but no date was confirmed. ?The Galaxy Nexus is Google?s latest reference device that will be the first phone or tablet to be launched with the newest flavor of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich.

It is hard to imagine why Verizon would be so secretive about the release of these two devices. The Droid line up has been an anchor in Verizon?s Android line up, and the Galaxy Nexus might be the most anticipated Android phone release in over a year.

Why does Thanksgiving dinner make you sleepy?

Thanksgiving DessertsFor years, you?ve heard the tremendous fatigue experienced after an American Thanksgiving dinner laid at the feet of the turkey ? or more precisely, blamed upon the tryptophan in that turkey. Trytophan, apparently, is the go-to amino acid for those who want to get sleepy.

Let me note, before we go on, that for all its association with tryptophan, turkey doesn?t even crack the top 50 in this list of tryptophan-rich foods. (Number one: stellar sea lion kidney.)

In any case, according to an article in the Los Angeles Times, that appeared in time for Thanksgiving 2008, the real story may be more complicated than that:

Turkey does contain a large amino acid called tryptophan. So eating turkey puts some tryptophan into your bloodstream. But there are lots of other large amino acids riding around in there too.

For the tryptophan in turkey to do its sleep-inducing work, it needs an accomplice. Maybe the bread stuffing, the mashed potatoes, those candied yams:

When you eat carbohydrates, the pancreas releases insulin, and one effect of that is to lower the levels of all the large amino acids in your blood ? except for tryptophan. The upshot? You have relatively high levels of tryptophan in your blood, and in your brain that?s converted into the neurotransmitter serotonin, and that can make you sleepy.

It seems that the turkey?s tryptophan dose is amplified by the sweet and starchy sides. Indeed, perhaps the sides alone would do the job (by clearing out the non-tryptophan amino acids) even if you missed out on the turkey.

(We shouldn?t forget, of course, that eating more than you?re used to in a sitting ? and giving your system more digestive work to do than it?s used to ? might account for a good bit of the fatigue.)

In fact, the article suggests that maybe you?ll be even more sleepy if you don?t eat your turkey:

[E]ating protein has the opposite effect from eating carbohydrates ? it raises the blood levels of all large amino acids. If all you ate were turkey, you?d have relatively low levels of tryptophan ? and, if anything, you?d have some extra get-up-and-go, instead of all that extra lie-down-and-snooze.

Let?s pull back a moment to get clear on the tryptophan theory of needing a nap between dinner and dessert. Is the drowsiness due to the level of tryptophan relative to the other amino acids kicking around in your bloodstream? Or is it due to the the level of tryptophan relative to how much is normally present in your bloodstream?

If the article got the scientific story right, it?s the former ? so boosting non-tryptophan large amino acids would counteract the yawns, as would taking in less tryptophan. (I?m guessing maybe the tryptophan-uptake apparatus is sampling from the available large amino acids, which would mean whatever the absolute level of tryptophan coursing through your veins, a high relative level of tryptophan (compared to the other amino acids in the mix) is going to trip the ?boy are you sleepy!? circuits more often than not. The brain chemistry mavens are invited to chime in with the relevant facts.)

In any case, this whole discussion seems like a perfect opportunity to conduct some citizen science (and, come Friday, to collect some reports from the field).

Here is a form for data collection (*.doc format).

Ideally, we?d all want to sit down to the same Thanksgiving meal together (having all gotten a good night?s sleep the day before, etc., etc.). Sadly, that?s not going to happen. However, maybe you can rope those with whom you are dining on Thursday into participating.

Depending on the vibe at your Thanksgiving table, you can either ask the diners to keep track of what kinds of foods they eat, or you can assign your guests particular consumption objectives. Then, before dessert, have everyone do a quick assessment of his or her energy level.

With luck, we?ll get data for the following variations:

 • High-tryptophan food (like turkey), high carbohydrate intake. (Prediction: sleepy)
 • High-tryptophan food, low carbohydrate intake. (Prediction: not sleepy)
 • Skip the high-tryptophan food, high carbohydrate intake. (Prediction: sleepy)
 • Skip the high-tryptophan food, low carbohydrate intake. (Prediction: not sleepy)
 • High-tryptophan food, high carbohydrate intake, extra protein. (Prediction: not sleepy)
 • High-tryptophan food, low carbohydrate intake, extra protein. (Prediction: energetic)
 • Skip the high-tryptophan food, high carbohydrate intake, extra protein. (Prediction: not sleepy)
 • Skip the high-tryptophan food, low carbohydrate intake, extra protein. (Prediction: frighteningly energetic)

Of course, if you track participant input a bit more precisely, maybe we?ll stumble upon some other factor that turns out to be important, like vitamin A or sage.

If you use my form, you can return your results to me (as a *.doc or scanned into a PDF) by email: dr ? dot ? freeride ? at ? gmail ? dot ? com. I?ll compile the responses and we?ll see if we can make sense of the data.

See you back here on Friday morning with your results!

Fitch cuts Portugal rating on high debts, worse outlook (Reuters)

LISBON (Reuters) ? Fitch downgraded Portugal's credit rating to junk status on Thursday, citing large fiscal imbalances, high debts and the risks to its EU-mandated austerity program from a worsening economic outlook.

The ratings agency cut Portugal to BB+ from BBB-, which is still one notch higher than Moody's rating of Ba2. S&P still rates Portugal investment grade.

Fitch said a deepening recession makes it "much more challenging" for the government to cut the budget deficit but it still expects fiscal goals to be met both this year and next.

"However, the risk of slippage - either from worse macroeconomic outturns or insufficient expenditure controls - is large," Fitch said.

The challenging economic environment was clear in a Reuters poll on Thursday, where economists forecast Portugal's economy will contract by 2.9 percent next year, the deepest recession since the 1970s, and 1.6 percent this year, in line with the government's estimates.

Portugal's 10-year bond prices plunged, sending yields surging more than 100 basis points to 13.85 percent -- the second highest level in the euro zone after Greece. The spread to German Bunds also rose more than 100 basis points to 1,168.

The downgrade of Portugal came after the dramatic deterioration of the euro zone crisis in recent weeks as it spread to bigger countries like Italy and Spain.

"The worsening regional outlook helped inform the downgrade (of Portugal)," Rabobank said in an analyst note. "This, in turn, underlines the mounting risk of systemic downgrades."

Portugal sought a 78-billion-euro bailout from the European Union and IMF earlier this year and has adopted sweeping austerity measures to bring public accounts under controls.

Under the loan program Portugal must cut the budget deficit to 5.9 percent of gross domestic product this year from around 10 percent in 2010. Next year it must cut the deficit further to 4.5 percent.

STATE COMPANIES A RISK

Fitch said the state-owned "enterprise sector is another key source of fiscal risk" and has caused a number of upward revisions to the country's debt and budget deficit figures this year. The government has said there was an unexpected fiscal shortfall of about 3 billion euros this year.

"Given these downside risks, Fitch sees a significant likelihood that further consolidation measures will be needed through the course of 2012," Fitch said.

It sees Portugal total debt peaking at 116 percent of GDP in 2013 from 93.3 percent at the end of last year.

Filipe Garcia, an economist at Informacao de Mercados Financeiros, said that while the downgrade does not change the government's financing conditions as it is under a bailout, it could worsen the situation for companies.

"Where (the downgrade) has an impact is on companies, such as banks and other issuers like EDP or Brisa, whose ratings are greatly influenced by the sovereign rating, leaving them in a more difficult situation," said Garcia.

The agency said Portugal's debt crisis poses big risks for the country's banks. "Recapitalisation and increased emergency liquidity provision from the ECB to Portugal's banks will, in Fitch's view, be needed and provided," it said.

Under Portugal's bailout, 12 billion euros has been set aside for funding banks if necessary.

Fitch said a worsening fiscal or economic situation could lead to further downgrades. "Furthermore, although Portugal is funded to end-2013, sovereign liquidity risk may increase materially toward the end of the program if adverse market conditions persist," Fitch said.

The government hopes to return raising debt in financial markets at the end of 2013.

Gingrich risk: Will the GOP cast its lot with him? (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Being a conventional Republican has never been Newt Gingrich's style, and he clearly doesn't see it as the way to beat Mitt Romney in the presidential nominating contest.

Gingrich, the former House speaker, is sticking to his call for lenience for some illegal immigrants, a stand that critics call amnesty and that veers from GOP orthodoxy. A day after he emphasized his point in a debate, his position drew both praise and condemnation Wednesday.

But there's broader debate within Republican circles, six weeks ahead of the Iowa caucuses: Do party loyalists think their best challenger to President Barack Obama is a 68-year-old veteran of Washington's inside games, who left Congress with dismal approval ratings and who recently held a million-dollar consulting contract with mortgage backer Freddie Mac?

Gingrich is the latest Republican to emerge as a serious rival to Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who is more popular with the party establishment than with conservative activists. Campaign veterans still tend to see Romney as the likeliest nominee. But Gingrich's long, roller-coaster career makes it hard to rule him in or out with confidence.

Gingrich seems to have become "the center of gravity in this very unusual Republican nomination contest," said Dante Scala, a pollster and University of New Hampshire political scientist. He said the former Georgia congressman might be able to unite very conservative voters "who want a fundamental change in the scale and scope of government" and "somewhat conservative Republicans, who just want to defeat Obama."

"Illegal immigration is Newt's acid test," Scala said, and tea party conservatives might be "having second thoughts today. Let's see if he can keep them on board."

Attention focused Wednesday on Gingrich's renewed call for pathways to legal status for illegal immigrants who have lived long, peaceful and tax-paying lives in the United States.

"I don't see how the party that says it's the party of the family is going to adopt an immigration policy which destroys families which have been here a quarter-century," Gingrich said in the Republican debate Tuesday night. "I'm prepared to take the heat for saying let's be humane in enforcing the law."

Heat came quickly. "Newt Gingrich is finished!" said William Gheen, president of the anti-immigration group ALIPAC.

Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, one of Congress' most outspoken conservatives, said Gingrich's prescription "is a form of amnesty" that "makes it harder" to consider endorsing him.

King told reporters America will suffer "if we let the rule of law be eroded and we allow people to be rewarded for breaking the law" by entering the country illegally.

Gingrich allies noted that he doesn't advocate citizenship, even for law-abiding, long-term illegal immigrants. They say his plan is a humane and realistic acknowledgment that the government is not going to round up and deport 11 million people who are here illegally. The smartest use of resources, they say, is to focus on illegal immigrants with few ties to their communities and problematic records with paying taxes and staying out of trouble.

Romney offered Gingrich no wiggle room. While campaigning in Iowa, he said, "People who have come to the country illegally should not have a special pathway that is preferable to those that stand in line in their home countries to come to this country."

Romney said Gingrich's plan would not stand scrutiny. "How about someone who's been here 20 years, how about 12 years, about 10, five, three?" he said. "How many children do you have to have to apply to this principle?"

"We make a mistake as a Republican Party in trying to describe which people who've come here illegally should be given amnesty," Romney said.

Democrats denounced Romney's position Wednesday. And some defended Gingrich, which may be of little help in Republican primaries.

"The truth is, he's correct," Rep. Charles Gonzales, the Texas Democrat who chairs the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, told reporters. "I'm hoping former Speaker Gingrich doesn't start walking back from it."

Steve Duprey, a Republican National Committee member from New Hampshire, who is uncommitted in the presidential race, said he applauds Gingrich for tackling the touchy immigration issue. "But he's going to have a problem with the conservatives," Duprey said

Some conservative journals are taking a wait-and-see approach to Gingrich's prospects.

"If 2012 were an ordinary election year, Gingrich would be doomed by his gaffes, three marriages and fleeting alliances with Hillary Clinton on health care and Nancy Pelosi on global warming," columnist Fred Barnes wrote in the Weekly Standard. But Republicans are obsessed with ousting President Barack Obama, he said.

"And if that means choosing a candidate with a lurid past and a penchant for self-destruction," Barnes said, then Republicans "are likely to swallow hard and nominate Gingrich."

Romney will keep arguing that he is best-suited instead.

Look out kids, here comes the 'Wolf Daddy'

Courtesy of Xiao Baiyou

Xiao Baiyou, the self-proclaimed "Wolf Daddy" with his four children.

By Bo Gu, NBC News

BEIJING ? Just as the ?Tiger Mom? controversy started simmering down in China, the ?Wolf Daddy,? a self-proclaimed expert on strict parenting, is sparking a new round of fervent discussion on child-raising methodologies among anxious Chinese parents.

The ?Wolf Daddy? is actually Xiao Baiyou, a 47-year-old Chinese businessman who deals in real estate and luxury goods. This past June, he published a book on parenting that featured an eye-catching photo on the cover of a graduation cap with a wooden ruler underneath, a device commonly used by old-time Chinese teachers and parents to spank their children when they misbehaved.

The message was clear and straightforward: Children need to be disciplined, ruthlessly. He favored method is the rattan cane, which his own mother used on him.

Strict rules
Reasons for spanking vary from sneaking visits with friends to lying to diminishing academic achievement. In the book, Xiao recounts a time when Xiao Jun, his eldest daughter, could not complete a new song on her piano. Her calf was spanked 10 times while others watched, including her mom, who applied medicine on her bloody bruises afterwards.

Xiao lays out his spanking instructions in the book:
Before the kids go to junior high school, spank them every time they make mistakes, but greatly reduce the frequency after junior high since the children form their own personalities by that age;
The spanking tool is confined to the rattan cane only, which causes minor bruises;
Only hands and calves are spanked, other body parts are spared;
Mistakes are pointed out every time before the whack so children know why they are punished;
Sisters and brothers must watch when one of them is smacked so they learn;
The punished one has to count the number of spanking during each admonishment;
The punished one cannot try to avoid the punishment, otherwise he/she gets more.

Unlike many of his fellow citizens who are only allowed to have one child, Xiao has four children. Two of them were born in Hong Kong and two in the U.S., following a new trend in which middle-class Chinese citizens have children overseas to avoid the one-child family planning policy. Xiao originally had hoped for six children, but stopped at four when his company tumbled into financial problems.

?I persist on my own belief that has never changed: I use the oldest, the most traditional methods to educate my children,? writes Xiao in his 200-plus-page book.

Xiao?s list of banned activities is no shorter than those of the ?Tiger Mom,? Amy Chua:

No TV, except a limited amount of news and cartoons (teen soap opera dramas are absolutely prohibited);
No unmonitored Internet surfing;
No Coca-Cola (but tea is allowed);
No opening the refrigerator (so no unscheduled snacks);
No air-conditioning, to train the spirit of tenacity (ouch, summer in Guangzhou is brutally humid and hot);
No visiting friends unless a written application is filled out, providing information on the friend?s academic grades and their parents? names and phone numbers;
No pocket money at all;
And written self-criticism when mistakes are made.

Social life is severely controlled by the Wolf Father. Traveling is strictly monitored in case ?bad influences? affect the kids? academic grades. Once, when Xiao Baiyou sensed his son?s classmates were ?bad boys? and the school didn?t respond to his request to separate them, Xiao made a quick decision to move and forbad his son to contact any of his former classmates. Dating is utterly out of the question, but Xiao told NBC News in a recent phone interview that he told his kids once they were enrolled at Peking University to ?go find your true love now!?

Extra curriculum activities are considered frivolous. Xiao forced his son to give up basketball because it was taking up too much time.

Outraged reaction??
Xiao got widespread attention after he registered with China?s Twitter-like micro blogging site Weibo under the name of ?China Wolf Father? three months ago.

The Weibo account, with its short introduction, says ?one scolding every day sends your children to Peking University,? one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in China, and it quickly attracted over 2,400 followers. His book is called, ?Therefore, Peking University Brothers and Sisters,? and it has sold over 20,000 copies If you search ?Wolf Daddy? on China?s local search engine Baidu, you get over 1 million results.?

But the attention he?s gotten doesn?t mean every Chinese parent believes his is the best parenting approach. In a recent online chat with chinanews.com, many readers left disapproving or even angry comments. One reader called ?og_wfny? said, ?you are building your vanity on your children?s pain.?

Shi Shusi, an editor at a national newspaper ?Worker?s Daily,? commented: ?Wolf daddy can only train wolf cubs. This story has nothing to do with human beings.?

Xiao argues that all those critical voices are from the people who either do not have parenting experience or do not truly understand him. He?s extremely proud of his three children who got into Peking University, but denies that was his ultimate goal (the fourth is still in high school).

?This is only a goal during their study times, a finishing point of their high school, but a beginning to new life. Their ultimate goal is to bring glory to my family, and I believe they will achieve that goal by being decent, capable, healthy and honest people,? Xiao told NBC News.

Without a doubt, Xiao?s four children are impressive: the son is a chess pro and loves Chinese ink painting, the eldest daughter is good at writing and plays piano, the second daughter is a calligraphy master and the third daughter is a professional guzheng (a traditional 21-stringed musical instrument) player.

NBC News tried to interview Xiao?s children but was told they do not wish to be disturbed while they are focusing on their college studies.

Xiao Yao, the son, said in the book that he believes he and his sisters have ?much stronger self-control? than other children thanks to their father?s strict parenting.?

But the boy also wrote about his self-pity in another article included in the book: ?Although daddy?s parenting gave us many traits other children don?t have, there are regrets in my childhood. I remember one summer some relatives came to visit and we children jumped and laughed on the bed, I was so happy. This only happened once in my childhood and it will never happen again. That was the only moment I thought childhood could actually be worry-free! I wish I had a few more such moments!?

When asked if he ever has any regrets in his parenting, Xiao Baiyou said ?no? without any hesitation. But he said he regrets not buying his wife a ring or flowers after they got married. He says his wife, who he calls ?the queen? in the family, never used make-up after she married Xiao, since every penny was spent on their children?s education, like expensive piano classes.

Xiao does has one question that he wishes could reach the president of the United States: ?Dear Mr. Obama, I?m really curious to know, were you spanked when you were a child??

(AP) ? Duke is still the king of Maui. Tyler Thornton made sure of it.

Thornton capped a thrilling game between basketball behemoths, hitting an off-balance 3-pointer with 20 seconds left to give the sixth-ranked Blue Devils enough cushion to finish off a 68-61 win over No. 14 Kansas for its fifth Maui Invitational title.

Thornton hit one 3-pointer with 1:10 left and gave the Blue Devils the cushion they needed with his second, the shot clock winding down, a host of Jayhawks in his face.

Thornton's big 3s kept Duke (7-0) undefeated in Maui Invitational at 15-0.

Bahrain used "excessive force" in crackdown, says inquiry (Reuters)

MANAMA (Reuters) ? Bahrain's security forces used excessive force to suppress pro-democracy protests earlier this year, torturing detainees to get confessions, an inquiry panel charged with investigating abuses said on Wednesday.

The government commissioned report, designed to help heal sectarian divisions between the island kingdom's Sunni rulers and majority Shi'ites, acknowledged five people had been tortured to death but said abuses were isolated incidents.

However the inquiry panel, led by Egyptian-American international law expert Cherif Bassiouni, dismissed Bahrain's allegation of Iranian interference in fomenting unrest, saying that was not supported by any evidence.

"In many cases security agencies in the government of Bahrain resorted to excessive and unnecessary force," Bassiouni said at the king's palace, adding that some detainees suffered electric shocks, and beatings with rubber hoses and wires.

Bahrain's Shi'ite-led opposition reacted coolly to the report, some saying it did not go far enough while others complained that those responsible for the abuses remained in office.

Sheikh Ali Salman, head of the Shi'ite Wefaq bloc which quit parliament over the unrest, said: "We cannot say Bahrain is turning a new leaf yet...because the government that carried out all those abuses is definitely not fit to be given the responsibility of implementing recommendations."

Bahrain's Shi'ite majority, inspired by uprisings that toppled the leaders of Tunisia and Egypt, took to the streets in February and March to demand political reforms but their protests quickly escalated into the worst sectarian political violence since the mid-1990s.

The ruling al-Khalifa family responded by declaring martial law and called in troops from fellow Sunni Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as it set about crushing the protests.

The inquiry panel said there was no official policy of abuse during the widespread unrest, led by Bahrain's majority Shi'ite population demanding an end to sectarian discrimination and demanding a greater say in government. A few Shi'ite groups called for the abolition of the monarchy altogether.

The panel - which said 35 people were killed, including five security personnel - urged a review of sentences handed down on people arrested following the protests, when more than 2,000 state employees were also sacked, according to Bassiouni.

KING RENEWS ACCUSATION AGAINST IRAN

King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa, speaking after Bassiouni delivered his report, repeated the accusations against Iran, but said laws would be reviewed and if necessary revised in light of the unrest.

"We do not want, ever again, to see our country paralyzed by intimidation and sabotage... nor do we want, ever again, to discover that any of our law enforcement personnel have mistreated anyone," he said.

"Therefore, we must reform our laws so that they are consistent with international standards to which Bahrain is committed by treaties," he said.

In a statement, Bahrain noted the inquiry showed five deaths during the unrest were the result of torture, but added: "The report does not confirm that there was a government policy of torture, mistreatment or using excessive force."

A section of the 500-page report found the security service and interior ministry "followed a systematic practice of physical and psychological mistreatment, which amounted in many cases to torture, with respect to a large number of detainees."

Bassiouni also echoed elements of the kingdom's narrative of the unrest, saying Sunnis were targeted for intimidation by protesters. These included foreigners, including Pakistanis that the opposition say were naturalized because they are fellow Sunnis and employed in security services.

The United States has said a $53 million arms deal depends on the delivery of the report, and Bahrain has already acknowledged security forces used excessive force in some cases, while consistently denying any coordinated policy of torture.

The report follows a state-orchestrated "national dialogue" in the wake of the unrest which opposition groups dismissed as a farce.

The crackdown has left Bahrain polarized along sectarian lines, with low expectations from both sides that the inquiry would lead to reconciliation.

"It should have criticized the opposition that claims to represent the Shi'a, it only criticized the government," said Sheikh Muhsin al-Asfoor, a pro-government Shi'ite cleric who advises the king on Shi'ite affairs.

Maryam al-Khawaja, an activist with a Bahraini human rights group, suggested the investigation wound up exonerating Bahrain rather than identifying abuses, noting on Twitter: "Minutes after talked of violations...Hamad thanked the police."

James' Empty Blog: Cancer survival: Macmillan hails major ...

The first thing I thought of when I saw this story was the talk given by Gerd Gigerenzer last year at this odd but interesting workshop. The gist of it was that "survival time" as a measure of performance in medical science could be very misleading, as it does not necessarily indicate any increase in lifespan or reduction in death rate. Increasingly aggressive and sophisticated screening and diagnosis procedures will automatically result in increased "survival time" even without any improvement in treatment, simply through spotting the cancer earlier in its progress. This isn't a purely theoretical point, he had plenty of statistics to back it up too. That's not to say there haven't been genuine advances too, but 5y survival rate doesn't necessarily measure them correctly.

5 Ways to Turn Social Customers Into Brand Ambassadors (Mashable)

Duke Chung co-founded Parature in 2000, with a vision to provide superior customer support software accessible via the Internet. Today, Parature?s Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) product suite supports millions of end users worldwide. With the advent of social media channels, customer service has forever changed. Consumers are no longer willing to sit and listen to classical music on hold. In today?s age of hyper-responsiveness, customers expect instant responses from support reps on very public online platforms.

[More from Mashable: Who?s Tweeting About Black Friday? [INFOGRAPHIC]]

Instead of shying away from social media, smart businesses will leverage their social channels to spread a positive brand reputation, to connect happy customers and to step up their customer support efforts.

Consumers aren?t eager to blast negative messages about your company ? unless your brand is unresponsive. I recently learned at an IBM conference that customers are five times more likely to post something positive than negative, and that companies usually have at least 10 warnings before someone posts a negative comment.

[More from Mashable: Old Spice?s Latest Gambit: A Bear-Shaped Deodorant Holder [VIDEO]]

Happy customers who get their issues resolved tell an average of four to six people about their positive experiences, according to the White House Office of Consumer Affairs. It pays to treat your customers well, not only for the repeat business, but also to gain the positive word-of-mouth consumers now broadcast across social media. Satisfied customers can become your most influential brand ambassadors. They?ll help to answer customer service questions posted online and also tout their own positive experiences with your business.

Here are the five best ways to turn customers into brand ambassadors through customer service.

1. Be Fast

When a customer turns to social media for a support issue, he expects a brand to generate the fastest response possible. According to a recent UK study, 25% of social media users expect a response within one hour, and 6% expect a response within 10 minutes. If you allow a support issue to dangle for too long, you risk being perceived as a company that either doesn?t know the answer or doesn?t care enough to reply promptly.

Remember, most people on social networks aren't itching to post negative comments. They only do so after a bad experience. Therefore, don?t give them enough time to have a bad experience.

2. Be Visible

Private and direct messaging on Facebook and Twitter is all well and good, but when it comes to customer service, it?s best to be totally transparent and visible. The answer you give to one customer could, in turn, help thousands more. Think of each post and interaction as a resource that future customers can reference. Not to mention, customers will be more apt to direct friends to your page with their own questions.

Social media sites foster an online community around your brand. Watch how customers discuss and respond to your products so you can join the conversation and better understand the community that supports your brand.

3. Be Consistent

It?s vital that you ensure all customer support answers remain consistent across the web and across all social channels. If a common question is posted on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, then each response should communicate the same solution. Conflicting answers create confused, unhappy customers. Just as people expect consistent experiences with your products, they also expect consistent service across all of your channels. Brand accuracy drives confidence and credibility, and helps build brand loyalty among your customers.

4. Be Organized

If consistency creates brand ambassadors, then being organized is equally paramount. Admittedly, the cross-company integration and management of social media continues to be challenging. Maintaining a successful social media presence on just one network is a full-time job. Trying to do it over multiple networks is impossible if your support staff isn?t properly organized.

Customers can spot disorganization a mile away, especially online. However, if you demonstrate that your company support knows what it?s doing, you?ll earn the respect and trust of brand loyalists. Organization goes beyond knowing who does what on the support team; it?s also vital that everyone on the team is on the same page. Each team member must know where to seek reliable answers, and each must source information from the same place.

5. Be Human

As cool as Siri is, she still hasn?t crossed from digital assistant to human entity. Until then, your social media customer support should remain as human as possible. On the bright side, social networks already take the formalities out of conversation. It?s one of their biggest draws.

Therefore, a customer?s name isn?t ?Inquiry #83kd4z.? She?s Christie from Denver. People respond best when they feel like they?re talking to other people. Your customer support should make customers feel as if they're posting a normal question on a friend?s wall. Creating that kind of relationship with your customer should be the priority of any company.

Using customer service to create brand ambassadors isn?t the Herculean task it once was. Social media is presenting countless opportunities to turn your company?s support system into an open, interactive community, where customers can share their positive experiences with one another and spread the good word about your products and services ? all on your behalf.

NBC orders a full season of 'Grimm'

More thrills and chills to come, y'all!

NBC announced today that its picking up their fairy tale/crime drama "Grimm" for a full season. The pickup shouldn't come as too much of a surprise considering how well the series has performed on Friday night ... which is why this next bit of info is a bit strange: NBC is giving the show a new timeslot ? temporarily.

(TODAY.com is powered by msnbc.com, which is a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

So which day ending in "Y" will "Grimm" be moving to?

The network will be airing an all-new episode of the David Giuntoli starrer on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 10 p.m. But (isn't there always a but), in a kind of weird move, another original episode will air the next night in its regular timeslot, Friday at 9 p.m.

"Grimm," which comes from "Buffy" executive producer and Angel co-creator David Greenwalt and Sean Hayes, has delivered solid numbers in its Friday night timeslot. The show has averged 6.9 million viewers and a 2.3 rating/7 share in the adults 18-49 demographic.

A 'Grimm' twist to new police drama

Previously, the peacock network gave full season orders to comedies "Whitney" and "Up All Night" and garnered some serious flack for shelving cult-hit "Community" starting midseason.

It seems fairy tales are the new crime drama in TV world: ABC recently granted their fairy tale-inspired series "Once Upon a Time" a full season order as well.

"Grimm" airs Fridays at 9 p.m. on NBC.

Lead coal improvements killing businesses

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) - Businesses in the area of the Lead and Coal Improvement Project are cutting down on hours and laying off employees, but it's not enough.

Now they've launched an online petition to get someone in the mayors office to notice they haven't had customers in months.

Yog Shrenstha owns the Y-Mart Gas Station he says because of the ongoing construction project his sales are at a stand still. "I have only 10 percent of business maybe," he said.

Before the bulldozers and mountains of dirt he was selling 2,000 gallons of gas a day. Now it's down to just 4,000 gallons in one month. He says his store shelves are empty because he can't afford to restock.

"Now I only have one part time staff. He opens only three hours in the morning, and me and my wife are working here for nothing.

Katie Calico owns The Talking Fountain an art gallery across the street from Shrenstha's gas station. Her business is suffering even more. "When the end of July came and the road closed, everything went really quite," said Shrenstha. "Since then we've had two customers."

That's two customers in the last four months. City officials say outdated water and gas lines are tieing up the project, and they understand the frustration.

"They're not seeing people on the ground as much as they want," Mark Motsko Albuquerque Municipal Development spokesman said. "We understand that, but we want to be able to be proactive." Motsko say the new lines are vital to a long lasting and up to code project.

The new lines should be installed in about three weeks. "We're working as quickly as we can," he explained. "After these two things are done, the gas company and the water authority, the crews will be out there and they'll be blowing and going."

Calico is concerned because the ongoing work leaves businesses blocked in through the holidays. She says sales will dwindle, but adds the trauma is forcing her to get creative. "Because we're not going to have a road for Christmas, we're really hoping that having a good really good functioning website so we can save Christmas."

She is also helping to circulate an online petition. Business consultant Eric Landin is in charge of the effort and says something must be done before multiple business have to shut their doors for good.

"It's an inconvenience at best to the people who live around here, but for the small businesses that depend upon this road it's worse than that, it's their life," Landin explained.

The city has put up signs trying to help vendors attract customers and offers them links on their Lead Coal Improvement Project website . The project is expected to be complete by the Spring of 2012.

Herbicide may affect plants thought to be resistant

ScienceDaily (Nov. 22, 2011) ? Purdue University researchers have discovered a fine-tuning mechanism involved in plant root growth that has them questioning whether a popular herbicide may have unintended consequences, causing some plants to need more water or nutrients.

Angus Murphy, a professor of horticulture, and Wendy Peer, an assistant professor of horticulture, study the movement of auxin, a plant hormone essential for plant development. They showed that ABCB4, a protein responsible for moving auxin into cells, also removes the hormone when too much has accumulated.

"We knew that the protein took auxin up, but found that it switched to removing auxin when a threshold is reached," said Murphy, whose findings appeared in the early online version of The Plant Journal. "It starts transporting the hormones out."

That fine-tuning mechanism is integral to proper development of plant root hairs, which extend from the main plant root and are where most water and minerals enter.

"The root hairs are doing all the heavy lifting for bringing the water into the plant," Peer said. "And ABCB4 maintains the right auxin levels to keep root hairs growing optimally."

The herbicide 2,4-D, a synthetic form of auxin, could have unintended consequences for the protein, Murphy and Peer said.

The herbicide is used to kill broadleaf weeds, which are dicots, while monocot grasses, such as sorghum and corn, are more resistant. That's because grasses inactivate 2,4-D inside the plant, while broadleaf dicots do not.

But ABCB4 is located on the root surface and can be switched into intake-only mode, disabling its ability to remove excess auxin from cells, before 2,4-D can be inactivated inside the plant. This results in shorter root hairs.

"This suggests that ABCB4 is an unexpected target of 2,4-D action," Murphy said. "It's something that we have to be aware of with the commercial introduction of 2,4-D resistant soybeans and other dicot crops."

Murphy said laboratory testing of ABCB4 in yeast, tobacco and human cells subjected to 2,4-D all showed that ABCB4 could be locked into the uptake-only mode. The root hairs of mutant plants that had ABCB4 removed were not affected by application of 2,4-D.

"It was very clear that what was happening in the plant was what was happening in the cell cultures," Murphy said.

Murphy said the findings suggest that application techniques that limit 2,4-D entry into soils are important to ensure that production with engineered 2,4-D resistant crop plants does not require additional fertilizer and/or water inputs.

The Department of Energy funded the study. Murphy and Peer partnered with scientists at the Institute of Experimental Botany at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

Spotify to announce 'what's next' on Nov. 30

Spotify

By Rosa Golijan

The folks behind?popular music streaming service Spotify?have some "exciting news" to share on November 30?? or at least so an invitation to their press conference tells us.

The invitation is pretty slim on details. We know that the event's theme is "what's next for Spotify" and that it?will be?hosted by the company's?co-founder and CEO Daniel Ek (as well as "a special guest or two").

Anything beyond those details is pure speculation.

Is Spotify planning to?begin allowing U.S.-based customers to purchase songs directly through the service (as Europe-based users may already do)? Will there be a snazzy new set of mobile apps? Has the company finally figured out a way to cure my addiction to horrible pop music?

We'll have to wait until November 30 to find out.
