Long-lost Cornell Woolrich story republished (AP)

NEW YORK ? A long-lost Cornell Woolrich story, with a rhyming title that seems destined to become a catch-phrase, is being published this week.

The Strand Magazine will reintroduce a short thriller by the author whose fiction was the source for such classic films as Alfred Hitchcock's "Rear Window" and Francois Truffaut's "The Bride Wore Black." The name of the new piece features the common slang for "detective" in the 1930s: "Never Kick a Dick."

"When I found out that a lost story by Woolrich existed yet hasn't been published in over 70 years I was skeptical," said Strand managing editor Andrew Gulli. "When I read the story though, I found my misgivings were unfounded. It's a great noir story: eccentric characters; card sharks; vengeance; gritty dialogue; and a fantastic twist."

The Woolrich story will appear in the Strand's holiday issue, coming out Friday.

Woolrich, who died in 1968 at age 64, wrote more than 200 novels and short stories, and his work was often adapted into film, radio plays and television. His style changed dramatically over time, from the jazzy influence of F. Scott Fitzgerald to the pulp prose of some of his `30s work to a lyrical approach in his later years.

Much of his writing is now out of print.

"It's not atypical for these great pulp writers to ebb and flow," says Murray Weiss, president of Literal Media, which manages rights to Woolrich's work. "But we are negotiating to bring his work back and you should expect to see more Woolrich on the shelves and as e-books in 2012."

"He's a mystery writer's mystery writer, the one all the pros speak about in tones of hushed reverence but that the average Joe wouldn't know by name," says Charles Ardai, publisher of Hard Case Crime, which reissued the Woolrich novel "Fright" in 2007.

Weiss said "Never Kick" was offered to the Strand because he was impressed by the magazine's history of publishing little-known stories by such authors as Mark Twain, Graham Greene and Dashiell Hammett. Weiss added that the Woolrich piece was so obscure he couldn't find it in the agency files and had to track it down through biographer Mike Nevins.

"I was fascinated by the plot ? a rich college kid on spring break in Florida is marked, robbed and led to suicide by gangsters in a high-stakes poker game, whose tragic death is avenged by his New York-based tough guy brother," Weiss said.

The Strand story was first published in Double Detective magazine in 1938, and then forgotten for decades even as Woolrich became a leading crime writer. "Never Kick" is vintage hard-boiled fiction ? the word "hard-boiled" appears several times ? with great names such as Tricks Bernstein as the heavy and Semaphore Stell as the blonde. The setting is the penthouse of the Miami-Coney Plaza, overlooking Biscayne Bay. The detective, who is indeed on the wrong end of a kick, is Driscoll ? no first name.

"It's baffling to me that it has remained unpublished for nearly three-quarters of a century while some better-known Woolrich stories got reprinted three, four, five times," Ardai says. "It's a fine example of Woolrich's work during his pulp period (the late `30s), packing a novel's worth of characters and plot into just 10 pages of concentrated storytelling."

Ardai can already imagine the movie. Quentin Tarantino would be a "no-brainer" as the director.

"And casting?" he wonders. "It's a story about two tough guys going toe-to-toe, one cold, one hot. How about Daniel Craig vs. Robert De Niro? With Rose McGowan as the dame."

"Jon & Kate" editor arrested for child porn possession (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? A 56-year-old TV editor who has worked on "Jon and Kate Plus 8" and other cable reality shows featuring kids has been charged with possession of child pornography.

According to documents obtained by RadarOnline, William Blankinship was arrested October 21 in North Carolina as part of an FBI sting and has been charged with 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.

Blankinship is a subcontractor for Figure 8 Films, and has edited such TLC shows as "Jon and Kate Plus 8," spin-off "Kate Plus 8," "17 Kids and Counting" and "Table for 12."

No bond has been set yet for the accused, who remains under the authority of U.S. Marshals.

"Bill Blankinship was employed by Serious Robots, with whom Figure 8 Films subcontract for editing services. Upon learning of the shocking allegations, his employment was terminated," a Figure 8 statement, provided to US Weekly, read.

The statement went on to assure that "at no time was this man ever in the field or in direct contract with any of the talent from any of our productions."

Olympus risks lawsuits unless probe truly independent: TSE (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Olympus Corp risks possible lawsuits unless a planned probe of acquisitions at the heart of a scandal engulfing the endoscope maker is truly independent, the head of the Tokyo Stock Exchange warned Friday.

"There should be no prejudice. There are laws to protect shareholders," Atsushi Saito told a regular news conference.

Olympus, he added, should avoid picking members of a panel it has promised will investigate its M&A activity who lean toward the management's position.

Olympus agreed on October 21 to appoint the third-party panel to look into the deals, although it has yet to identify its members. Saito said he suggested on October 14 that it establish such a group.

Executives at Olympus are struggling to convince shareholders it acted properly in paying a record $687 million in advisory fees to two obscure firms related to the $2 billion acquisition of British medical equipment maker Gyrus in 2008. They are also under fire for the purchase of three companies in Japan, the values of which it has since largely written down.

Saito described the scandal and management decision that had spurred a sharp drop in the firm's corporate value as "very regrettable".

Olympus's shares resumed a slide on Friday, falling 10 percent to 1,217 yen, following a rebound Thursday after Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, the executive at the heart of the furor and architect of the ousting of Olympus's British CEO Michael Woodford two weeks earlier, resigned as chairman and president.

Since the boardroom putsch against Woodford the company's market value has almost halved.

In a bid to curtail margin trading, the Tokyo bourse said later in a release that it was temporarily raising the payment required for such trades, when shares are bought with money borrowed from brokers using other securities as collateral.

The exchange probably wants to cool off overheated Olympus share trades, said Tomoichiro Kubota, an analyst at Matsui Securities

PAYMENTS DEFENDED

Kikukawa's successor, Shuichi Takayama, on Thursday defended the 92-year-old company's payments to financial advisers, which the ousted Briton has identified as New York-based AXES America LLC and Cayman Island-based AXAM Investment Ltd.

That fee amounted to 36 percent of Gyrus's acquisition price. Fees to advisers in M&A deals typically amount to no more than 2 percent.

Takayama also insisted that Olympus had acted properly when it paid $773 million for three domestic firms -- a microwave cookware maker, a medical waste recycler and a cosmetics firm that together employ around 120 people.

Olympus revealed on Friday that combined revenue for the three businesses will likely amount to 6.5 billion yen ($86 million) this business year, less than a tenth of an estimate it made in 2008 for sales of 88.5 billion yen in the 12 months to March 31, 2013.

Woodford, who provided internal documents to Reuters and other media outlets related to those deals and the Gyrus acquisition following his firing, said on Wednesday he is in contact with the FBI about the scandal.

Olympus said it is unaware of any probe by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation into payments it made to the financial adviser.

"Some media have reported that we have been contacted by the FBI. So far we haven't confirmed that," it said in a statement.

A Japanese market watchdog, the Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission, is also looking into the company, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Saito's call on Friday for a thorough investigation comes after Masaki Shizuka, the senior executive officer overseeing listings at the exchange, told a parliamentary committee on Thursday that there were concerns investors might lose trust in information provided by Olympus because the management was in place at the time of the deals in question.

State of Ohio intervenes to keep exotic pets in zoo (Reuters)

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Reuters) ? The state of Ohio intervened on Thursday to stop six exotic animals from being transferred back to the widow of the man who released them and dozens of other creatures last week shortly before killing himself.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture said it issued a quarantine order for the three leopards, two monkeys and one grizzly bear currently held at the Columbus Zoo, citing concerns "the animals could be infected with disease as a result of the conditions in which they were reportedly held."

Earlier on Thursday, the zoo said it had been notified by attorneys representing Marian Thompson that she planned to collect the six animals and return them to the couple's farm in Zanesville, Ohio.

Thompson arrived at the zoo on Thursday afternoon but left empty-handed.

A spokesman for Ohio Governor John Kasich said: "The governor's biggest concern is not only the threat to the public health of the people of Zanesville but to the animals themselves."

"And we will use whatever tools are at our disposal to protect both the health of the people and the animals."

Last week, Thompson's husband Terry Thompson set his collection of 56 exotic animals free and then committed suicide.

No note was found with Thompson's body. He had been released late last month from a year-long prison sentence for violating federal gun laws.

The release of the lions, tigers, bears and other animals created havoc around Zanesville and forced authorities to shoot dozens of the animals, including 18 Bengal tigers, which are endangered, as well as numerous adult lions.

Of the 56 animals released, 49 were killed and buried on the farm.

The six animals will continue to live at the Columbus Zoo while the Department of Agriculture decides what to do with them.

Dale Schmidt, president and CEO of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, said he was "pleased" with the department's decision. He said zoo officials were concerned about the welfare of the animals.

"They will continue to get the best of care while they are in our custody," Schmidt said.

Wayne Pacelle, the president of the Humane Society of the United States, welcomed Thursday's action by Ohio.

"The sheriff's report shows the animals living in squalid conditions," Pacelle said. "Mr. Thompson had a history of cruelty. There were endless complaints. It would be reckless to allow her to reclaim the animals."

The quarantine will remain in effect indefinitely, officials said. But Thompson can request a legal hearing on the matter within 30 days.

Ohio is one of seven states that does not restrict ownership of such exotic animals. The others are North and South Carolina, Alabama, West Virginia, Nevada and Wisconsin.

Kasich has issued an executive order, asking state agencies to use all available powers to regulate the animals until the legislature passes a law.

In naming female CEO, IBM passes gender milestone (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? IBM Corp. has passed a milestone, naming the first female CEO in the company's 100-year history.

The selection of Virginia "Ginni" Rometty, announced Tuesday, is also a statement about the growing influence of women in the top tiers of business. Although women have made momentous strides, breaking through corporate America's "glass ceiling" over the past half century, a woman's ascendance into the chief executive position of a major corporation still holds significance. Currently, only 16 Fortune 500 companies are led by a woman; Rometty will be the 17th when her appointment takes effect on on Jan. 1.

Even so, two of the world's biggest technology companies will have female leaders. Last month, Hewlett-Packard Co. named Meg Whitman, former eBay Inc. chief and candidate for California governor, as its CEO.

Their appointments are "setting a fabulous example" in the promotion of female executives, said Jean Bozman, an analyst with IDC who has followed IBM and HP closely for years.

"It does create an environment in which more of these high-ranking women executives can see that's within reach," Bozman said. "The more that happens, the more normal that will be. I think this might be a great sign that we've turned a corner. Certainly the Baby Boomers have wanted this for a long time."

Rometty, IBM's sales and marketing chief, is taking over from Sam Palmisano, who this year turned 60, the age at which IBM CEOs have traditionally stepped down.

Rometty, 54, will be among more than a dozen female CEOs in the Fortune 500. Another prominent female CEO of a technology company is Ursula Burns of Xerox Corp., who has held that title since 2009.

HP, of course, had another female CEO, Carly Fiorina, but her tenure ended in acrimony when she was forced out in 2005 over disappointing financials and the fallout from her hard-fought battle to buy Compaq Computer.

HP and IBM are bitter rivals that have followed somewhat inverted paths for years.

When IBM was near collapse two decades ago with the eroding dominance of its mainframes, HP thrived with the advent of personal computing and Silicon Valley's dot-com boom. Now the tables are turned ? IBM is thriving while HP is hurting.

Two of technology's most powerful women will square off from sharply different positions.

Rometty will inherit a company in a sweet spot.

IBM, which is based in Armonk, N.Y., has proven resilient in the downturn because of hard decisions it made in the 1990s to focus on the high-margin areas of software and technology services, moving away from computer hardware. Rometty played a leading role in the transformation.

She was instrumental in the formation of IBM's business services division, including overseeing IBM's $3.5 billion purchase of PricewaterhouseCoopers' consulting business in 2002, which is a key element of a strategy that has made IBM a heavily copied company. Rometty joined IBM in 1981 as an engineer.

She is "more than a superb operational executive," Palmisano, who is keeping his job as chairman, said in a statement.

IBM's stock has more than doubled since the depth of the recession in 2008. Meanwhile, HP stock has fallen by about 50 percent.

A series of scandals has led to turmoil at the top of HP, with former CEO Mark Hurd resigning under pressure last year over ethical violations, and his successor, Leo Apotheker, being fired after less than a year on the job after fumbling an important restructuring.

One of Whitman's first moves was to accelerate a decision about whether HP will sell, spin off or keep its personal computer business, the largest in the world by sales. Investors seem undecided about what course they want HP to take. Some analysts worry that Apotheker did irreparable harm to the brand by announcing it was for sale before a buyer had been found, making it potentially hard to sell and hard to keep.

Analysts have generally said that both women are right for their roles ? HP needs Whitman's star power to woo Wall Street while IBM needs a steady operator with broad experience like Rometty to continue IBM's predictable, steady growth.

IBM dates to June 16, 1911, when three companies that made scales, punch-clocks for work and other machines merged to form the Computing Tabulating Recording Co. The modern-day name followed in 1924.

It had a boys' club image but shed it long ago. Rometty's status as a front-runner for the CEO job was a poorly kept secret. Industry insiders have whispered about it for years, and Tuesday's announcement was only a mild surprise because of its timing.

IBM CEOs have traditionally stepped down at 60 years old, but Palmisano had tamped down talk of his retirement, insisting that he wanted to stay on as chief. In rare public comments, he said last year that he was "not going anywhere" and that there's no formal policy at IBM dictating when a CEO should retire.

Bobby Cameron, an analyst with Forrester Research who has worked with IBM in various roles over the years, said that in meetings with Rometty is "engaging" and inquisitive. Her interest in emerging technologies, not just the established sales leaders, is an important characteristic. Cameron thinks she's an ideal choice to continue Palmisano's work.

"I think she's smart. She asks questions; she doesn't just come in with an agenda, and she's interested in the leading edge, not just what's driving volume ? all those things are important for a CEO to have," Cameron said.

Palmisano has the same characteristics, Cameron said.

"I think it will be more of the same, and I think that's a good thing," he said.

Nevertheless, investors' reaction was muted. IBM shares fell $1.16, or 0.6 percent, to $179.20 in extended trading Tuesday, after the announcement.

Tunisia Islamists win vote; clashes in cradle of revolt (Reuters)

TUNIS (Reuters) ? The Islamist Ennahda party was officially declared winner of Tunisia's election, setting it up to form an Islamist-led government, as poll violence erupted in the town where the Arab Spring uprisings began.

Ennahda has tried to reassure secularists nervous about the prospect of Islamist rule in one of the Arab world's most liberal countries by saying it will respect women's rights and not try to impose a Muslim moral code on society.

Protesters angry their fourth-placed party had been eliminated from the election set fire to the mayor's office in Sidi Bouzid, where 10 months ago vegetable seller Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire in a protest against officialdom.

His act ignited unrest that led to the fall of Tunisia's autocratic leader Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali and inspired uprisings in Egypt, Libya and other Arab states.

Ennahda's leader Rachid Ghannouchi paid tribute to the provincial Tunisian town's role in Tunisia's revolution.

"We salute Sidi Bouzid and its sons who launched the spark and we hope that God will have made Mohamed Bouazizi a martyr," said the soft-spoken Islamic scholar, who spent 22 years in exile in Britain.

"We will continue this revolution to realize its aims of a Tunisia that is free, independent, developing and prosperous in which the rights of God, the Prophet, women, men, the religious and the non-religious are assured because Tunisia is for everyone," Ghannouchi told a crowd of cheering supporters.

Announcing the results, election commission members said Ennahda had won 90 seats in the 217-seat assembly, which will draft a new constitution, form an interim government and schedule new elections, probably for early 2013.

The Islamists' nearest rival, the secularist Congress for the Republic, won 30 seats, the commission members told a packed hall in the capital, ending a four-day wait since Sunday's poll for the painstaking count to be completed.

ISLAMIST-LED GOVERNMENT

Ennahda, banned before January's revolution, fell short of an absolute majority in the new assembly. It is expected to broker a coalition with two of the secularist runners-up and, with them, form a government.

The Islamists will get the biggest say on important posts. They have already said they will put forward Hamadi Jbeli, Ghannouchi's deputy and a former political prisoner, for the post of prime minister.

Tunisia's complex election system, which replaced the rigged, one-horse races conducted before the revolution, made it impossible for any one party to win a majority of assembly seats.

Ennahda lies at the moderate and liberal end of the spectrum of Islamist parties in the Middle East. Ghannouchi models his approach on the moderate stance of Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan.

Secularists say they fear the Islamists will try to impose an Islamic moral code on society but Ghannouchi has denied this. His officials say there will be no restrictions on foreign tourists -- a big source of revenue -- drinking alcohol or wearing bikinis on the country's Mediterranean beaches.

The party's victory is the first for Islamists since the Hamas faction won an election in the Palestinian Territories seven years ago.

It is a result which will resonate in Egypt, where a party with ideological ties to Ennahda is expected to do well in a multi-stage parliamentary poll that starts in November.

REVOLUTION'S BIRTHPLACE

Protesters in Sidi Bouzid were angered that election officials had canceled seats won by the Popular List, a party led by businessmen Hachmi Hamdi, over alleged campaign finance violations. The party is popular in the town.

"They have set fire to a large part of the mayor's office, and the police are nowhere to be seen," local resident Mehdi Horcheni told Reuters by telephone from the town.

He said elsewhere in the town, protesters set fire to an Ennahda campaign office and a training center, while police used tear gas in a failed attempt to disperse the crowd.

Another witness, Hafed Abdulli, said the crowd was burning tires in the streets. "People are protesting against the cancellation of the Popular List," he said.

The Popular List was running in fourth place in the election, according to preliminary results, before its seats were canceled. The party's leader used to support Ben Ali and during the election ran a populist campaign heavily promoted on the British-based television station he owns.

The violence appeared confined to Hamdi's supporters, as the three main secularist parties have already accepted defeat and there were no reports of clashes in other towns.

There was none of the violence that was predicted involving hardline Islamists who are more radical than Ennahda or the secularists who believe the election result will threaten their liberal lifestyles.

Ghannouchi and his party officials have issued a carefully-choreographed series of announcements designed to reassure skeptics that there is no need to fear an Islamist government.

Defying stereotypes about Islamists keeping women covered up, one of the party's most prominent candidates is a businesswoman who does not wear the Islamic veil, or hijab, and this week sang along to pop songs at a party rally.

Ennahda has also reached out to anxious investors by saying it will not impose Islamic banking rules. It says it is inclined to keep the finance minister and central bank governor in their posts when it forms the new government.

93% Weekend

All Critics (46) | Top Critics (23) | Fresh (43) | Rotten (3)

Its final moments offer a vision of what a contemporary romance can achieve: an appreciative gasp of truth, a wet-eyed hope for more.

One of the truest, most beautiful movies ever made about two strangers.

If you've ever met someone who changed your life in the space of days, you'll relate to something in this movie.

The organ that "Weekend" is most concerned with isn't the one you might think, but the human heart.

In just a short period of time, a weekend hookup tests the boundaries each man has set for himself.

If this lovely movie proffers a thesis or a moral, it's a simple one. A more open, fully integrated and passionate life feeds the soul no less than air and water. Or coffee the morning after.

Weekend might be a small film recounting an intimate relationship, but it speaks to the grandest of ideas.

By the end of their weekend together, it feels like you know these guys and, even better, like you're rooting for them.

A heartfelt romantic comedy, a touching rumination on sexual identity and a striking look at what it is to be gay in 21st Century Britain.

Like Before Sunrise, the real joy of writer/director Andrew Haigh's film is in watching two people make bedrooms, overpasses, kitchenettes, and couches feel alive with potent conversation and pregnant silences.

While you might appreciate its goal, the writing and execution aren't strong enough to reach it.

It's a thrill to watch, just as it's thrilling to be in the hands of such a gifted new filmmaking talent.

This appealing gay-themed drama, written and directed with intelligence by Andrew Haigh, is a British cousin to the American mumblecore movement...

The story is simply told with a lot of talking, some loving and much philosophizing over the meaning of life. The good thing is that [writer-director-editor] Andrew Haigh wears all his hats well and shows a deft hand at all his chores.

The results are gently sincere but maybe a little misguided, a far cry from the note-perfect, transcendently adorable 1999 gay love story "Trick," which this one reminds of?and pales in comparison to.

It's equally as chatty as [Before Sunrise and Before Sunset], but the dialogue is more to the point, less cerebral, and below the belt.

Chaz Bono: Not Bitter at Dancing With the Stars!

Chaz Bono did not leave Dancing With the Stars on the best of terms.

He and partner Lacey Schwimmer were fired up after their performance this week, with the usually reserved duo saying the judges' comments were "disrespectful."

They weren't complaining about the scoring that left them in last, but in particular to the way Bruno Tonioli compared Bono to a cute, fluffy penguin in his critique.

But after Chaz Bono's elimination became official, he gave a really nice farewell speech, and it seemed he and Schwimmer had put any hard feelings behind them.

Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer Pic

"I was quite angry," Bono, 42, said. "But I feel really good today. I'm not leaving the show bitter or angry. I'm grateful for Lacey and everybody I worked with on the show. It was a wonderful, life-changing experience. I'm so glad I did it."

Some people suspected World Cup soccer star Hope Solo could have been voted off based on her low score on Monday night and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy's outburst at Len Goodman - but not Bono and Schwimmer.

"After the judges' comments and the scores last night, it was kind of no question [it would be us]," Schwimmer said. "It was almost as if they set it up."

Justified or not, Chaz is watching from the sidelines now, but he lasted six strong weeks, five longer than a lot of people (including himself) expected.

What do you think: Should he have been voted off?

Siri gets a HAL 9000 makeover thanks to ThinkGeek (Yahoo! News)

Give your iPhone some vintage sci-fi flair with the IRIS 9000

When Apple unveiled its new iPhone 4S, the most striking new feature was the integrated virtual assistant named Siri. And you don't have to be a sci-fi junkie to know that Siri's eerily casual conversations are similar to those of HAL 9000, the evil computer AI of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Now, ThinkGeek is making that connection even more opaque with the IRIS 9000, an interactive dock for the iPhone 4S that gives Siri some old-school style.

When an iPhone 4S is plugged into the dock and Siri is activated, an iconic HAL-esque red eye pulses as virtual assistant speaks, just like in the Odyssey movies. ?The IRIS comes complete with a remote control to activate Siri from across the room, and features a built-in microphone to make sure your digital helper can hear you from a distance. A speaker inside the dock amplifies your iPhone's audio so you can listen to your new computer overlord loud and clear.

The IRIS 9000 is currently in production and ThinkGeek expects to have it ready for sale by April of 2012. The nifty gadget will set you back a totally reasonable $59.99.

PFT: Dolphins sign Losman as backup

p1_owensAP

On Tuesday, receiver Terrell Owens worked out for scouts in California.? The only problem?? No scouts showed up.

For starters, most scouts currently are criss-crossing the country, visiting college practices and games.? Also, teams with interest in available free agents will bring them in for workouts, in lieu of traveling to watch them run and cut.? Any team interested in Owens can do that, any day of the week.

Then there?s the fact that, if a team brings T.O. in, the team will want him to do things he didn?t do on Tuesday, like run 40 yards in a straight line.

The most common day of the week on which players work out for teams is Tuesday, and 53 players not named Terrell Owens received on-site workouts this week.

Here?s the list of all of them.? Keep an eye out for a certain former top-five draft pick, and for the absence of a man whose DNA match is still getting it done for the Buccaneers, who currently are in significant need of a running back.

Falcons:? tackles Kirk Chambers, Kyle Jolly, Kenny Wiggins; running backs Mike Cox, Verron Haynes, Jason McKie, Dimitri Nance, Lousaka Polite; guard Dennis Landolt.

Cowboys:? running backs Aaron Brown and Jason Parmele; defensive backs C.C. Brown, Chris Horton, Darcel McBath, Justin Taplin-Ross, C.J. Wilson; guards Nick Cole and Mike Gibson; receivers Yamon Figurs, Johnnie Lee Higgins, Tiquan Underwood, Demetrius Williams; tackle Langston Walker.

Broncos:? running backs Xavier Omon and Tyrell Sutton.

Lions:? defensive end George Selvie.

Texans:? defensive tackles Kentwan Balmer, Landon Cohen, Lamar Divens, Ra?Shon Harris, Trey Lewis, Kade Weston.

Vikings:? quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson; receivers Chris Brooks, Kerry Taylor, Terrence Toliver.

Jets:? receivers Andy Brewer, DeMarcus Ganaway, Dexter Jackson, Jamarko Simmons; tight end Shawn Nelson; defensive end Ricky Sapp.

Eagles:? defensive back Andrew Sendejo.

Buccaneers:? running backs Jon Hoese and Eddie Williams; tight end Ryan Winterswyk.

Titans:? guards Stanley Daniels, Leonard Davis, Vincent Manuwai, Duke Robinson.

Redskins:? running backs Tristan Davis, Kareem Huggins.

Back to Owens, it?s hard not to wonder whether the open workout was part of his latest reality show, a plot line aimed at driving whatever contrived notion the producers are trying to push.

It doesn?t mean T.O. will never find another job in the NFL.? All it takes is one team to be sufficiently desperate to bring him in, check him out, and offer him a contract.? He played well for the Bengals last year, and if he is recovered from the torn ACL he suffered in the offseason, he could still contribute to a team.

If that team is willing to assume the risk that Owens will find a way to tear the team apart from the inside out.

Will Ferrell wins Mark Twain prize

Will Ferrell, who refined his impersonation of President George W. Bush on the sketch comedy show "Saturday Night Live" and later took his presidential act to Broadway, was awarded the nation's top humor prize Sunday night.

The TV star went on to make movies and co-found the popular website FunnyorDie.com in a career that won the 44-year-old the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Slideshow: Will Ferrell?s wonderful world (on this page)

It was the Bush impression, though, that might have made the Washington crowd laugh ? and cringe ? the hardest Sunday.

"Washington is not a city much known for its comedy ? at least not the intentional kind," said PBS news anchor Gwen Ifill, who mentored Ferrell on his journalistic skills for the movie "Anchorman."

Story: Movie brotherly love has its ups and downs

She introduced a clip of Ferrell playing Bush in "You're Welcome, America: A Final Night with George W. Bush" on Broadway. Dressed in a flight suit under a banner that read "Mission Accomplished" in a mock Oval Office he explained how Morocco had sent a special unit of 2,000 trained monkeys to fight terrorism "and make children laugh."

With that kind of comedy, Ferrell had accomplished something amazing, Ifill said.

"He got Democrats to pay and see and applaud George W. Bush," she said.

Conan O'Brien, Jack Black, Matthew Broderick, Ben Stiller and Billie Joe Armstrong from the rock band Green Day performed Sunday in Ferrell's honor, joined by Molly Shannon, Tim Meadows and Andy Samberg from Ferrell's "SNL" days.

Story: What happens when Smurfs meet the stars?

The show was taped for broadcast Oct. 31 on PBS stations nationwide.

Black opened the show with a song-and-dance routine for his friend and tried to lead the crowd in chanting "Will, Will, Will, will rock you."

"Will Ferrell, did you notice how I changed it from 'We Will Rock You?'" he said.

"It's about time he got some official Washington, D.C., props," Black said, noting that Ferrell had "reigned supreme" on "SNL" for seven years. "He's crazy funny. He makes you laugh so hard you cry and pee simultaneously."

O'Brien saluted Ferrell for giving so much of himself to his comedy. He said Ferrell had his sides physically softened and his "buttocks lowered with magnets" to prepare his body for spandex routines and at times streaking naked.

Story: James Spader in talks to be the new 'Office' boss

"Will magnifies and celebrates his flaws, just to entertain us," O'Brien said.

O'Brien also thanked Ferrell for being his first guest and his last guest when he was host of NBC's "Tonight Show."

"It's a rare friend who's going to stick with you for five-and-a-half months," he said.

Shannon, who met Ferrell while she was a waitress in Los Angeles, said that contrary to his TV persona, Ferrell is very serious and sweet to work with. As for the award, she joked "Will's agents and manager clearly bought this for him."

Story: Party on! The five best wild guys in film

Some of Ferrell's famous sketches from "SNL" were played on the big screen, including his "Cow Bell" routine with Christopher Walken and "Craig the Spartan Cheerleader."

When he was finally awarded the prize, a bronze bust of Twain, Ferrell promptly dropped it on stage and tried to pick up the broken pieces. He joked that he had turned the prize down 13 times before but decided to accept this time because of the prize money (there isn't any) and to be watched on PBS "by hundreds of people across this country."

He thanked the Kennedy Center as "one of the few places that uphold comedy as what it truly is, an art form."

Ferrell is the son of a teacher and Roy Lee Ferrell, a guitarist for the Righteous Brothers. He grew up in Irvine, California, went to college at the University of Southern California and got his start in comedy with the Los Angeles improv group, The Groundlings.

That's where he was discovered by "SNL."

Ferrell went on to make some outlandish movies including "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" and "Old School." He has also tried his hand at drama, including this year's independent film "Everything Must Go." One of his upcoming projects is a Spanish-language comedy, "Casa de Mi Padre."

Ferrell told The Associated Press he has tried different avenues as movie studio budgets tightened. He opted for projects with smaller budgets but more creative freedom.

Longtime collaborator Adam McKay and Ferrell also took their comedy to the Internet with the 2007 creation of the popular video website FunnyorDie.com. Since then, it has drawn an audience of millions for its original Web programming.

McKay, a former head writer on "SNL," said it was Ferrell's "Cow Bell" sketch that has always made him laugh the hardest.

Before the show, Ferrell said playing the Bush character is one of his favorite memories for its political laughs, especially when he took the character to Broadway.

"We hit it at the perfect time when people wanted some sort of comedy after the eight years we just went through," he said.

Thirteen other people have won the Mark Twain Prize since 1998, including Tina Fey, Bill Cosby, Steve Martin and Whoopi Goldberg. It recognizes people who have followed the tradition of Samuel Clemens, the writer known as Mark Twain who used social commentary and satire to have an impact on society.

Zynga's IPO due week before Thanksgiving: sources (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Zynga Inc is currently planning to price its initial public offering and have its shares begin trading the week before the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday on November 24, two sources briefed on the offering said on Monday.

The sources cautioned that the social gaming company's plan has not been finalized and could change. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the plans are not public.

Zynga's debut is among a clutch of highly anticipated dotcom IPOs. Groupon launched its own roadshow this week and hopes to price its shares in early November.

If it goes ahead, Groupon will become the first major IPO since the market slump that began in the summer, serving as a litmus test for future offerings.

Roadshows typically take two weeks. That means Zynga is looking to start its IPO marketing effort close on the heels of Groupon's market debut.

On the comic's to-do list between now and then is to watch some movies.

"What's the front-runner? Who knows?" he asked on the red carpet.

Murphy was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2007 for his performance in "Dreamgirls" but lost to Alan Arkin.

The 84th Annual Academy Awards are Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012.

Marshall Fine: Director Jonathan Segal talks about cancer and ...

When you've got a main character who's pretending to have cancer - and whose father is actually dying of the disease - and your movie is at least partially a romantic comedy, well, let's just say that tone becomes a tricky thing.

But Jonathan Segal found a way to balance it out in his movie, Norman, which opened Oct. 21 in limited release.

"That balance was something I paid close attention to," he says. "I was careful to avoid melodrama. I wanted some things to be funny. Even in the face of tragedy, things can be funny. I think that's why a lot of people have a strong reaction to the film - because that's the reality of life. Something terrible goes on. But at the same time, you find things to laugh about in the midst of it."

Norman stars Dan Byrd (Cougar Town) as the title character, a high-school student suffering through more than normal coming-of-age dramas. His mother was killed in a car accident; his father (Richard Jenkins) has been diagnosed with stomach cancer. So Norman, who's never had much luck with girls, is contemplating suicide.

Then he meets a girl, Emily (Emily van Camp), who seems to like him. But, reeling from a terminal diagnosis for his father and hassled by a friend for his lack of reliability, Norman blurts out that the reason he's been unreliable: He - Norman - has cancer. Once that genie is out of the bottle, there's no putting it back.

"He doesn't say it to gain popularity - though he does get that," Segal says. "He's not trying to get over on his friends. Part of allowing himself to perpetuate that lie is about his urge to kill himself and lashing out at the shitty situation he finds himself in. He says it to get an upper hand on his friend. He sticks with it because he's struggling with his own thoughts of suicide."

Part of that self-proclaimed cancer diagnosis involves Norman shaving his head to convincingly play the part of the cancer patient, something Byrd does on camera.

"That was a big day," Segal says. "It was exciting - and a logistical challenge. That's a one-take moment; once we did it, we couldn't go back. And it's one of those quintessential things for an actor: gaining weight for a role, or shaving your head. Dan was nervous about it but it went pretty quickly. We had to prepare meticulously. It was an exciting day."

Norman is Segal's second film as a director; his first, The Last Run, came and went in 2004.

"I look at that film now and see all the things I would have done differently," he says. "It never quite became what it should have. There are 15-minute stretches that I like. But I'm harsh on my own work."

He knows that Norman could face a challenging commercial environment: "Dramas are a tough sell," he says. But the film has played 15 festivals in the past year and Segal hopes it takes him to another film.

"I'm interested in psychology and story-telling," he says. "The craft of filmmaking is a fusion of the two. Every time you approach a scene, you're trying to reverse-engineer an emotion: where do you put the camera, how do you want your actors to be, what do you want the audience to feel. It's like a Rubik's cube - there are so many different ways to approach it."

Greene hoping Jets' run game is getting off ground

By DENNIS WASZAK Jr.

updated 3:57 p.m. ET Oct. 21, 2011

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Shonn Greene is confident he has a big game coming. The New York Jets running back is staying patient and trying not to pay attention to those who think perhaps he's not able to carry the load.

Rex Ryan declared before the season that Greene would be the Jets' "bell cow," with the bulk of the carries going to him. With LaDainian Tomlinson used more as a third-down back, it would be Greene's responsibility to uphold Ryan's "Ground-and-Pound" approach on offense.

So far, Greene has been mostly grounded. He has rushed for 314 yards on 93 attempts for a mediocre 3.4 average per run. Still, he and the offensive linemen say there have been recent signs that Greene and the Jets' offense are running in the right direction.

The political effects of existential fear

ScienceDaily (Oct. 20, 2011) ? Why did the approval ratings of President George W. Bush -- who was perceived as indecisive before September 11, 2001 -- soar over 90 percent after the terrorist attacks? Because Americans were acutely aware of their own deaths. That is one lesson from the psychological literature on "mortality salience" reviewed in a new article called "The Politics of Mortal Terror."

The paper, by psychologists Florette Cohen of the City University of New York's College of Staten Island and Sheldon Solomon of Skidmore College, appears in October's Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal published by the Association for Psychological Science.

The fear people felt after 9/11 was real, but it also made them ripe for psychological manipulation, experts say. "We all know that fear tactics have been used by politicians for years to sway votes," says Cohen. Now psychological research offers insight into the chillingly named "terror management."

The authors cite studies showing that awareness of mortality tends to make people feel more positive toward heroic, charismatic figures and more punitive toward wrongdoers. In one study, Cohen and her colleagues asked participants to think of death and then gave them statements from three fictional political figures. One was charismatic: he appealed to the specialness of the person and the group to which she belonged. One was a technocrat, offering practical solutions to problems. The third stressed the value of participation in democracy. After thinking about death, support for the charismatic leader shot up eightfold.

Even subliminal suggestions of mortality have similar effects. Subjects who saw the numbers 911 or the letters WTC had higher opinions of a Bush statement about the necessity of invading Iraq. This was true of both liberals and conservatives.

Awareness of danger and death can bias even peaceful people toward war or aggression. Iranian students in a control condition preferred the statement of a person preaching understanding and the value of human life over a jihadist call to suicide bombing. But primed to think about death, they grew more positive toward the bomber. Some even said that they might consider becoming a martyr.

As time goes by and the memory of danger and death grows fainter, however, "morality salience" tends to polarize people politically, leading them to cling to their own beliefs and demonize others who hold opposing beliefs -- seeing in them the cause of their own endangerment.

The psychological research should make voters wary of emotional political appeals and even of their own emotions in response, Cohen says. "We encourage all citizens to vote with their heads rather than their hearts. Become an educated voter. Look at the candidate's positions and platforms. Look at who you are voting for and what they stand for."

Kristin Cavallari Hides Party Evidence, On 'When I Was 17'

Next episode, also featuring Lenny Kravitz and Bryan Greenberg, airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.

We all remember party girl and badass Kristin Cavallari from "The Hills," and the die-hard "Hills" fans remember where it all began: "Laguna Beach." On this week's episode of "When I Was 17," Kristin takes us back in time to her "Laguna Beach" days, rehashing a Halloween rager that almost went off without a hitch.

"When I was 17, my Dad got remarried and went away on his honeymoon, so I threw a huge Halloween party," Kristin recalls on the latest episode, premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV and also featuring Lenny Kravitz and Bryan Greenberg. "Everyone was dressed up for Halloween, which makes it that much more fun. We were definitely dancing. We were drinking. My house was filled with people."

The next day, Kristin cleaned the entire house until it was spotless, leaving no evidence of the party the night before. Or so she thought.

"I thought I did such a good job. And then my dad and my stepmom came home, and apparently I just missed one beer can under the couch, and that's what my Dad found."

Busted! But we're glad Kristin decided not to change her partying ways. After all, what would "Laguna Beach" have been without the party girl?

Don't miss this week's episode of "When I Was 17," featuring Kristin Cavallari, Lenny Kravitz and Bryan Greenberg, at 11 a.m. Saturday on MTV.

Lindsay Lohan: Handcuffed in Court, Jailed For Probation Violation!

Lindsay Lohan was handcuffed and led off to a jail cell today after a judge revoked her probation. She'll be free on bail shortly, pending a Nov. 2 hearing.

On that date, Judge Stephanie Sautner will determine how much - if any - time behind bars the train wreck will serve for her repeated probation violations.

Sautner Lohan is completely responsible for being thrown out of the Downtown Women's Center, where the judge told her she had to complete probation.

The last straw for Sautner came when LiLo's probation report quoted her as saying she didn't community service "fulfilling." That's when this happened ...

Lindsay Lohan Handcuffed

Lindsay got kicked out of the Women's Center after no-showing nine times, and Sautner also doubted Lohan has been seeing her psychiatrist as required.

The judge dismissed Shawn Holley's argument that Lohan had to leave town to work, and that's why she missed a number of community service dates.

Sautner recalled all the screw ups Lindsay has had in her court cases, reminding Holley that compared to being in jail right now, "Probation is a Gift."

Before Lindsay was taken away in cuffs today, the judge said she must complete 16 hours at the morgue before the Wednesday, November 2 hearing.

Lindsay could get nearly a year and a half in jail then, though Sautner said that's unlikely do to overcrowding. Still, this judge is not playing around.

What do you think? Should Lohan do hard time?

Nicole Scherzinger Solo Album Delayed Again

Killer Love now reportedly slated for December 6 release.
By Gil Kaufman

Photo: Steve Granitz/ WireImage

After waiting more than five years for the domestic release of former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger's debut solo effort, surely her fans can hold on for a few more weeks?

The long-delayed Killer Love, which dropped in an alternate version in England in March, was slated to finally wash up on American shores on November 15. But according to the Hollywood Reporter, the disc has once again been delayed, pushed back a few weeks until December 6. No reason was given for the latest delay and the singer's label, Interscope Records, would only say that the new release date would be "early December."

The U.S. version of the Scherzinger disc is slated to feature production by a slew of heavy hitters, including Lady Gaga collaborator RedOne, Jim Jonsin, The-Dream, Harvey Mason Jr. and Tricky Stewart. Sting ("Power's Out") and Snoop Dogg ("Peep Show") are among the reported guests. 50 Cent lends some verses to the first single, "Right There."

A spokesperson for Interscope could not be reached for comment at press time about the release-date change. Scherzinger began work on her solo debut in 2005, only to shelve that album and start over again on the new effort several years later.

In the meantime, Scherzinger is busy with her other full-time gig as a judge on Simon Cowell's "X Factor." On Thursday night's baseball-delayed mentors' home-visit episode, Scherzinger hooked up with Enrique Iglesias to judge the talents of her assigned group of mentees: the over 30s. So far, Scherzinger, who was tapped as the fourth judge after original fourth judge Cheryl Cole was let go early in production, has served as a type of younger doppelgänger for Paula Abdul.

Veteran choreographer Abdul, who has locked down the role of the often weepy, sensitive mentor with the heart of glass, now appears to have an emotional friend in Scherzinger, who has frequently been moved to tears by some of the auditioners.

While Scherzinger has also shown some tough tendencies when facing off against Cowell, during Thursday night's first mentor episode she mostly chilled on the couch with guest helper Iglesias and awkwardly bobbed her head while making intense faces as he watched singers Elaine Gibbs and Stacy Francis do their thing. She had a hard time, though, keeping a poker face while formerly homeless James Brown wannabe Dexter Haygood did his Mick Jagger-meets-David-Lee-Roth version of Beyoncé's "Crazy in Love."
