John Mayer Announces Spring Tour

His new album, Born and Raised, is also slated for the spring.

John Mayer announced he needed vocal surgery last fall, and now he's back and ready to hit the road.

On Monday (February 27), the Grammy-winning singer/songwriter announced plans for a spring tour, his first outing in nearly two years. The 18-date trek will kick off April 9 in Bloomington, Indiana, before wrapping up May 6 in Phoenix. The tour will be in support of his forthcoming new album, Born and Raised, which will be released sometime around the outing. The album's lead single, "Shadow Days," hits radio Monday.

The tour will help raise funds and awareness for the Northern California Institute of Research and Education, which "provides veterans with a healthy reintegration into civilian life." Mayer will auction off tickets to the shows to help raise money for the organization.

Born and Raised will feature production from Don Was, and Mayer will get some vocal and instrumental help from singers David Crosby and Graham Nash, keyboardist/pianist Chuck Leavell, bassist Sean Hurley and drummer Aaron Sterling. On tour, Mayer will be joined by guitarist and vocalist David Ryan Harris, guitarist Doug Pettibone and percussionist Michito Sanchez.

Previously, Mayer described the album as having "organic cowboy guitar sounds," adding that he had this very romantic thought when it came to the album's vibe: "What would it sound like if I wrote an album of cowboy songs on this guitar under the stars?"

"Every new record I start, a new aesthetic comes in. I can't help it," he said about the project. "I think it's gonna be more organic, more natural lyrics and chords and artful simplicity."

In a surprise that clearly shocked even her, acting legend Meryl Streep won the Best Actress Academy Award on Sunday (February 26) for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady."

It's Streep's third Oscar; she won in 1979 for her supporting turn in "Kramer vs. Kramer" and for Best Actress in 1983 for "Sophie's Choice." Her nomination for "The Iron Lady" was her 17th, the most of any actor in film history. She's received 13 nominations in the 29 years since her last win.

"When they called my name, I had this feeling I could hear half of America going, 'Oh no, come on. Her? Again?' But, whatever," Streep joked from the podium.

In the lead-up to the awards, the race seemed to be a two-way contest between Golden Globe winner Streep and Davis, who took home the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actress. But Davis was easily the front-runner. Her film, "The Help," was by far the most successful of all the films nominated in the Best Actress category, and she was the only contender whose film was also nominated for Best Picture.

Streep even embraced her former co-star Davis on her way to the podium. The two were both nominated — Streep for Best Actress and Davis for Supporting Actress — for their turns in 2008's "Doubt."

"First, I'm going to thank Don, because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech, they play him out with the music, and I want him to know that everything I value most in our lives, you've given me," a teary-eyed Streep said.

She also lavished praise on longtime friend and makeup artist Roy Helland, whom she worked with on her very first play when she moved to New York City to be an actress in the 1970s. They first worked together on the big screen in "Sophie's Choice" and have since collaborated on "every single movie in between." Helland scored his first Oscar for his work on "The Iron Lady."

Colin Firth, last year's Best Actor winner for "The King's Speech" and Streep's co-star in the box-office hit "Mama Mia!," presented the actress with the award. The actress dedicated much of her speech to her many colleagues in the room.

"I really understand I'll never be up here again," Streep said. "I really want to thank all my colleagues, all my friends. I look out here and, you know, I see my life before my eyes. My old friends, my new friends. And really, this is such a great honor, but the thing that counts the most with me is the friendships and the love and the sheer joy we have shared making movies together, my friends. Thank you, all of you, departed and here, for this inexplicably wonderful career."

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? NASCAR's premier event, the season-opening Daytona 500, is being delayed by rain.

accused Motorola Mobility and Google of standard patent abuse in its
latest antitrust complaint with the European Union.

In the formal competition law complaint filed on Wednesday,
Microsoft accused Motorola Mobility of not offering essential
patents on fair and reasonable terms, saying the mobile manufacturer
attempted to block sales of some Microsoft products using its
patents related to web videos.

The complaint came a week after the U.S. Justice Department and
the European Commission approved Google?s 12.5-billion-U.S.dollar
acquisition of Motorola Mobility.

?In legal proceedings on both sides of the Atlantic, Motorola is
demanding that Microsoft take its products off the market, or else
remove their standards-based ability to play video and connect
wirelessly,? said Microsoft Vice President and Deputy General
Counsel Dave Heiner in a blog post titled ?Google: please don?t kill
video on the web.?

Heiner said Motorola is demanding Microsoft to pay a royalty of
22.5 dollars for its 50 patents on the video standard for every 1,
000-dollar laptop, while a total of 29 companies only charge
Microsoft ?two cents for use of more than 2,300 patents.?

Motorola?s alleged patent abuse is called FRAND licensing
obligations, a legal acronym for ?fair, reasonable and

These new findings raise questions about?how the moon formed?and evolved, researchers said.

Although the Earth's crust is still shifting, driven by the churning semimolten rock underneath it, researchers had thought the moon had cooled off much too long ago to still have any such tectonic activity. For instance, the youngest known tectonic features on the lunar landscape until now ? small cliffs in the lunar highlands resulting from wrinkling of the surface as the moon's interior cooled and shrunk ? are thought to be less than 1 billion years old, although by how much is uncertain.

Now, images collected by the?Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter?hints the moon has probably seen tectonic activity within the last 50 million years.

In these photos, researchers spotted a dozen or so narrow, trenchlike features known as graben in the lunar highlands and in the dark plains of volcanic rock known as the mare basalts. Graben are essentially troughs with two faults or cracks in the surface on either side of them. They are thought to have formed as the lunar crust was stretched.?[10 Coolest Moon Discoveries]

"Overall on the moon, you have this contracting, shrinking environment, but in some places, apparently there's this stretching extension of the crust," said study lead author Thomas Watters, a planetary scientist at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.

The graben the scientists detected, which reach up to about 1,640 feet (500 meters) wide and 1.1 miles (1.8 kilometers) long, appear relatively pristine. This suggests they formed recently ? otherwise, they would be marred more often by craters from meteor impacts over time.

"We think they're less than 50 million years old, but they could be 10 million years old, could be 1 million years old, could have happened 40 years ago," Watters told SPACE.com. "The intriguing picture that's emerging of the moon is that there is recent geological activity going on."

Moonquakes?detected by seismic sensors installed during the Apollo missions support the notion of recent activity on the moon, researchers added. All in all, the moon's interior may still be hot.

"The moon may not only have been tectonically active recently, but may still be tectonically active today," Watters said.

Models of how the moon cooled over time suggest it was totally molten after its formation, and that it should now be contracting as it cools, forcing the surface to wrinkle. However, if this was true, such compression would have suppressed the creation of graben ? these ditches typically form when the crust stretches, not crinkles.

Instead, these findings suggest the moon was not completely molten after it was formed. If this were the case, the moon would not contract strongly enough to suppress the emergence of graben.

"Currently, a popular idea for how the moon formed is that it was completely molten in the beginning? after a?Mars-size object hit Earth?very early in its history, the debris cloud from the surviving material formed the moon," Watters said. "This may lend support to alternative scenarios that the moon was not completely molten when it formed, that only part of it was, forming a magma ocean."

Future research can look for more graben in Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter photos once the satellite finishes imaging the moon, Watters said. He and his colleagues detailed their findings online Feb. 19 in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Best Motion Picture of the Year: The Artist

There's been a certain inevitability about The Artist; it's taken top honors at the Golden Globe, the BAFTAs, and the Directors Guild of America Awards. It's a celebration of the movies (which the Academy can certainly appreciate) that's likeable but not lightweight. In other words, it has just enough gravitas that voters can feel comfortable choosing it over Hugo (another delightful homage to old movies that might lose simply because Martin Scorsese got his long overdue Best Picture/Director statues in 2007) and The Descendants (which just doesn't feel like it has the momentum). We think The Artist is going to win big Sunday night, and we haven't seen many signs that would dissuade us from what's become a majority opinion.

Best Achievement in Directing: Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist

It's rare that the director of the Best Picture winner doesn't take this one as well. Plus, if you win the Directors Guild of America award, you're practically a mortal lock for the Oscar. Even though Hazanavicius is up against some big names, we think he's got this one.

Best Performance by an Actor in Leading Role: George Clooney, The Descendants

The Academy loves George Clooney. The Academy also loves it when people deglamorize themselves. Thus, we're giving the Descendants star the nod over Jean Dujardin in what amounts to a two man race.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role: Viola Davis, The Help

Just about everyone commended The Help's ensemble acting, but even then, Viola Davis was singled out for praise. She was nominated once before (for Doubt, in 2008), and we think she's taking home the hardware this time.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role: Christopher Plummer, Beginners

This category is tough, because it features two elderly legends who've never won an Oscar: Christopher Plummer and Max Von Sydow. The Academy has snubbed these guys many times before (Von Sydow deserved to win for The Seventh Seal, Plummer for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country). Since Plummer already won the BAFTA, the Golden Globe, and like, every critic organization's award, we think he'll get the nod here.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role: Octavia Spencer, The Help

We think this one's pretty much a gimmie -- Spencer won the BAFTA, the Golden Globe, and the Screen Actors Guild awards in this category. And like Davis, she stood out in The Help, which is no small praise considering the actresses in that movie.

Best Animated Feature Film: Rango

With no Pixar flicks in the running this year, this category is wide open. We think Rango will take it, because it's fun and funny, and because it's loaded with movie references. (We could see the widely-praised but little-seen Chico & Rita sneaking in here, but we're sticking with the lizard.)

Best Original Screenplay: Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris

It won both the Golden Globe and the Writers Guild of America award in this category, so that's a good sign. Plus, it's another opportunity to give some love to the Woodman's prodigious, prestigious output -- even if Allen's recent films have varied in quality, he's still capable of making really good movies at an advanced age, which is something that the Academy members certainly admire.

Best Adapted Screenplay: Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, and Jim Rash, The Descendants

Alexander Payne is a screenplay adaptin' maniac. He already won an Oscar for Sideways, and it seems safe to say he'll get his second one here.

Remember when Lord of the Rings: Return of the King swept the Oscars partly because it was awesome but partly because the Academy wanted to give props to the whole series? This is the documentary version of that scenario. It also doesn't hurt that the Paradise Lost movies help spring three innocent people from the joint.

Best Foreign Language Film: A Separation

This one seems like a lock, since audiences and critics love it, and because it was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay. It also provides the Academy with a chance to spread some international goodwill at a time when the world community is rattling its sabers at Iran.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? President Hugo Chavez bid an emotional farewell laced with references to Jesus Christ and independence hero Simon Bolivar Friday as he departed Venezuela for Cuba for urgent surgery to remove a tumor he says is probably malignant.

Clasping the hand of his youngest daughter, Chavez addressed allies of his socialist political movement and troops standing at attention at the Miraflores presidential palace.

"I say this from my gut: With cancer or without cancer ... come rain, thunder or lightning ... nobody can avoid a great patriotic victory Oct. 7," the president said, refering to the date of Venezuela's presidential elections.

"Long live Chavez!" he cried.

The socialist president, who is seeking re-election, spoke of the tribulations of Bolivar and the burdens borne by Christ.

Chavez, 57, is turning to the same Cuban doctors who extracted a baseball-size cancerous tumor from his pelvic region last summer. This time, the growth is smaller, about an inch (two centimeters) in diameter.

The president has not disclosed the precise location of either tumor, nor said what kind of cancer he had.

Chavez's black SUV then left the palace and rolled slowly through the capital, with red-shirted bodyguards clinging to the running boards. His head and shoulders sticking out of the sunroof, the firebrand president waved to onlookers lining the avenues and people waving Venezuelan flags from rooftops.

A motorcade of white vans and police vehicles with flashing lights escorted him along the highway to the airport.

Cuban health care is generally considered good, but oncology experts not involved with Chavez's care say he could be taking a risk by skipping more respected facilities in the United States, Europe or Brazil ? which has Latin America's most advanced cancer centers with specialized radiation equipment.

"If you have a 'common' cancer, that of the breast, colon or lung ... then it's going to be easy to find standards of care that are the same in the U.S., Brazil or Cuba," said Dr. Julian Molina, an oncologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. "The problem comes when you have a tumor that's not one of the common ones, and that's what most of us suspect Chavez has."

Latin America's top cancer doctor, Paulo Hoff, who heads the cancer center at Sao Paulo's Sirio-Libanes hospital, considered the region's best, would not talk specifically about Chavez's case. But he did say that a cancerous tumor in the pelvic region would be mainly limited to four types: prostate, rectal, bladder and sarcoma, the latter being a rare and deadly form of tumor.

National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello, a retired army lieutenant who accompanied Chavez in his failed 1992 coup, said Friday that the Venezuelan opposition should be the most worried about the president's survival.

"The people in the street will not retreat a single millimeter, not a single millimeter, from what has been accomplished in these 13 years" since Chavez took office, Cabello said.

Chavez allies have accused their political foes of hoping the president will die, opening a door for the opposition to win the Oct. 7 vote.

Rival candidate Henrique Capriles has rejected such allegations and said he wishes for a Chavez recovery so Capriles can triumph "fair and square."

Luis Vicente Leon, director of local polling firm Datanalisis, said Chavez's most important political concern is convincing people that he's healthy.

"It is a different scenario if in the mind of voters an idea remains that the president is ill, with his near future compromised," Leon said.

Buses and cars fitted with red balloons and carrying Chavez supporters clogged streets in central Caracas early Friday on their way to the presidential palace, honking horns and blaring music from loudspeakers in the back of pickup trucks.

Government offices organized morning masses to pray for his health.

"We know and are sure that he will return strengthened, from a spiritual, human and physical point of view," Food Minister Carlos Osorio told state television.

Chavez plans to continue governing from Cuba instead of delegating authority temporarily to Vice President Elias Jaua. He has not said when he might return to Venezuela.

BIOTECHNOLOGY -- Regenerating skin, muscle . . .

Researchers at the Bio-SANS instrument at the High Flux Isotope Reactor used contrast variation and small-angle neutron scattering to get a first insight into how macromolecules form single polyelectrolyte chains in synthetic complexes. The unique properties of polyelectrolyte materials are of intense interest in biotechnology for making a type of membrane -- three-dimensional bio-scaffolds to grow cells for regenerating skin, muscle and even organs. Little is known about how the component chains in polyelectrolyte complexes form themselves, whether as strings or as coils, inside the bulk material. The SANS work will assist researchers in tuning thickness, uniformity, stability, swelling, permeability and other important variables. The results could open the door to multiple future applications.

HEALTH -- Virus response to pH changes . . .

The Sindbis virus, or SINV, is the prototype for viruses spread by insects, which cause some of the most devastating and widespread diseases among humans. Exposure to low pH (acidic) conditions causes dramatic changes in the three-dimensional structure of SINV that can help the virus membrane fuse with a cell membrane when the pH returns to normal. Small-angle neutron scattering at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's High Flux Isotope Reactor is improving understanding of how SINV delivers its infectious RNA into host cells by revealing details of these structural changes. When the pH is reduced from 7.2 to 6.4, the RNA in the SINV core changes, and much of the protein associated with the interior liquid bi-layer moves to the exterior of the virus particle. The SANS data, the first to show how the RNA and lipid components interact with the virus proteins as the pH changes, improve understanding of the effects of pH on SINV, which is an excellent model for studies of virus structure and function.

FUSION -- Supporting ITER systems . . .

U.S. ITER researchers at the Fusion Pellet Fueling Lab at Oak Ridge National Laboratory are developing and testing pellet injector technology for fueling and controlling the hot plasma in the ITER tokamak experimental reactor. Current research is focused on U.S. ITER contributions to fueling, disruption mitigation and vacuum systems. The work includes pellets and injectors to both fuel the plasma and control plasma edge localized instabilities. A novel pellet extruder has been developed to provide a continuous flow of solid hydrogen that can be cut into precisely sized pellets. Finally, a gas injection system to rapidly bring down a turbulent plasma when needed, a diagnostic to measure pellet mass in flight, and a roughing pump system to pump exhaust to the processing plant complete recent tokamak technology.

NEUTRONS -- Examining nanoporous carbons . . .

Several recent papers describe how Oak Ridge National Laboratory researcher Yuri Melnichenko and his collaborators continue to use neutrons and small-angle neutron scattering to bore through geological materials such as nanoporous carbons to understand their unique properties as storage media for greenhouse gases and for hydrogen in fuel cells used in transportation. The SANS method also shows promise for strategies for extracting a cleaner form of energy -- methane gas -- from hard shales. In other recent work on the behavior of CO2 confined in nanopores, the researchers turned to a silica aerogel model system as a good matrix material. They varied the silica aerogel surface chemistry to see how this influenced the phase behavior of the molecules of stored CO2.
